Grab any beat that you want, seclude it out and export as a high quality WAV file. Import it into any drum based instrument and control it there. You can start the sample at any time, control the pitch and the length and trigger it and place it as a track within your sequencer. (e.g., ReDrum by Reason and Ableton's tools) - quanitization

It's interesting, the difference between hip hop in the late 80s, when no one gave a shit about clearing samples, to hip hop today, when it's all (mostly) synth-based.

I use a combo of synths, Battery kits, Ultrabeat kits, Apple loops, sample CDs, and samples I grab from records and whatnot. coming up with an original sound is mostly about how you edit and use effects, eq, compression, filters, pitch, etc.. to manipulate sounds. What it comes down to, as in everything else, is putting a few thousand hours into experimentation and developing your own techniques.

Buy a magazine. Usually comes with a free Sample CD on the cover, although it's been about 5 years since I've bought one so could be wrong.
