I'm enjoying how fast the iPad is, and fear that flash would just not run smoothly enough, and the touch screen interaction model at least within safari would not work.
Wish Adobe had stuck at keeping Flash nice and light like the old days, rather than trying to fill the hole left by effectively discontinuing Director, which ran really sweetly 10 years ago.
I can also see why Adobe wouldn't want apps coming onto the store, that have an interim compiler, as the two companies would need to keep in sync, so would be more dangerous than just individual app builders having compatibility issues, it would instead be 1000s at a time, and would boil down to Adobe fixing something, and we know they're not the quickest to solve those things

If Zillow is the only thing you can cite it shows why Jobs feels able to make that call...that site is pretty much just Google maps in Flash anyway, nothing that can't be done in HTML.

@twokids I don't see how they are "controlling the internet", Apple is clearly supporting web standards and the living proof of that is the Webkit project, a fork Apple did of kHTML that turned out to be so decent that Google is also using it for Chrome, Chrome OS and their Android browser. Nokia and BlackBerry are using it or going to start using it too.
They have been adding support for the HTML5 features for quite some time already, Safari was the first browser to feature database local storage for example.
I know Flash is ubiquitous but it's not a standard, and Apple doesn't want to control the internet, in fact, Adobe with Flash and Microsoft with Silverlight are actually ways of trying to tie people up with closed proprietary plug-ins.

I want to know how fast the ipad battery kicks the bucket, insofar as my iphone after a year, the battery just loses power so fast.
- 10-12 hrs, reportedlymonospaced
- Oh, I see, you meant overall battery lifemonospaced
- You've got battery powered overalls?must_dash

And I think there are two discussion about this, Apple invented a platform of devices and set their rules to develop native apps from them, but they are not blocking internet access because they offer a really good web browser on those devices that is also cutting edge on HTML5 support. Both things are separate are should not be confused.
Apps != Web Browser
- yeah, but the browser on the ipad...sorry, no flash, no java...right?twokids

by the way, this week Adobe announced they are delaying their mobile Flash Player 10.1 to the 2nd half of 2010...

look monospaced, I'M not worried about the success of Apple...they will always have a legion of people like you to buy their overpriced products...
- First of all, I am not part of that "legion." And secondly, if you aren't concerned, then why are you acting like it?monospaced
- Because you seem convinced that they will fail because they aren't supporting Flash, despite their success.monospaced

This is a really exciting story and the ramifications are huge...so it is interesting to talk about. You can't deny that Apple is really throwing down...it will be fun to watch it play out.
Apple, Adobe...these are giant companies that make things....I don't care who wins or loses...I never liked Flash myself....kind if a pain in the ass program...
So may best company win!

Flash is a pain in the ass program to use - they haven't even got a decent undo feature working in it. But thats not the point - the Flash player is great, and lets face it nothing can do what it does in certain situations. Look at the work www.hi-res.net do and others. The web would be a duller place without Flash in the right situation for the right audience... Flash would be awesome on iPad or similar devices - this is a bullshit situation and shows Apples true colours - the irony is that Ridley Scott did for them years ago is starting to look like them as a company - same as Google, when things get too successful, the old ideologies go out of the window - dollars are what count and of course they always will. Just a shame that Apple and Adobe can't work something out.
- "the irony is that ad Ridley Scott did" - this is what I meant to sayckentish
- http://www.slate.com… read this. i think you will enjoy it.twokids
- spoken like someone who doesn't understand flash - as for the undo feature... it's AWESOME... it's just too much for you. ;)PonyBoy
- for you.PonyBoy
- what are you on about Ponyboy?ckentish

good god, this has nothing to do with frash! .net and java are also in this category as well. it's not a vendetta against adobe. it's just business.
they just want everyone using their tools/technologies to build apps. by exluding the other companies, more people (in general) will buy macs, learn cocoa, buy ipods/iphones/ipads in order to share in the profits.
this has nothing to do with flash being slow or adobe being 'lazy'. nothing. i know all you have to go on is what you see and hear, but read between the lines. put yourself in jobs' position and you'll understand. it's just bidness.
- ckentish0
yep i agree a little with the above - but the real issue is not about apps - its about iPads and iPhones not even playing flash on websites - it makes a shit browsing experience.
- ukit0
Third party plugins are probably bad as a general rule...think about how much better Chrome, Safari and FF are than IE...they are able to be better because each browser approaches how it renders the web slightly differently. When you have something like Flash accounting for a decent chunk of the web, it takes that freedom away.
- quack0
the gif is privately owned, licensed, and happy on all browsers. accept the flash man, accept the flash

Does Adobe have affiliates in Europe, if they are gonna sue Apple, it would have to start in Europe, in the same way Europe sued Microsoft a few years ago. The Europeans have better ways to find loopholes in the system.
- ukit0
What legal argument would Adobe possibly have?
- DoktorDavid0
It's ok - we could all be developing this...
- DoktorDavid0
Or this...
