2023 Was the Hottest Year Ever Recorded ... By a Lot
A new report warns that January is on pace to mark 12 months of temperatures exceeding the 1.5°C limit scientists warn could usher in irreversible climate catastropheCLIMATE SCIENTISTS ARE ringing in the new year with alarming data: 2023 was the hottest year ever on record, and not by a slim margin.
A new report published by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, a component of the European Union’s climate change observation program, found that “2023 is confirmed as the warmest calendar year in global temperature data records going back to 1850.”
According to the report, “2023 marks the first time on record that every day within a year has exceeded 1°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial level for that time of year,” and that January of 2024 is on pace to mark a 12-month period during which temperatures exceed the 1.5°C increase threshold scientists have warned could lead to catastrophic, irreversible climate ramifications if sustained.

Atlantic Ocean circulation nearing ‘devastating’ tipping point, study finds
Collapse in system of currents that helps regulate global climate would be at such speed that adaptation would be impossibleThe circulation of the Atlantic Ocean is heading towards a tipping point that is “bad news for the climate system and humanity”, a study has found.
The scientists behind the research said they were shocked at the forecast speed of collapse once the point is reached, although they said it was not yet possible to predict how soon that would happen.
Using computer models and past data, the researchers developed an early warning indicator for the breakdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), a vast system of ocean currents that is a key component in global climate regulation.

if anyone has an hour and a lot of brain cells to spare, have I got a video for you!
well watch the first 2 minutes anyway.
The whole video is one long "if we evolved from monkeys then why are there monkeys" gotcha! style argument given by Tucker and an astrophysicists pretending to be a geologist and a biochemist but comes off as the owner my local dim-sum place that I shoot the shit with and I mean that with the upmost respect.

Greenhouse gas emissions soar – with China, US and India most at fault
Satellite tracking data shows many countries and firms do not provide accurate figuresElectricity generation in China and India, and oil and gas production in the US, have produced the biggest increases in global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015, when the Paris climate agreement was signed, new data has shown.
Emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, have also risen, despite more than 100 countries signing up to a pledge to reduce the gas, according to data published on Sunday by the Climate Trace project.
The data shows that countries and companies are failing to report their emissions accurately, despite obligations to do so under the Paris agreement. More than 190 countries have been meeting in Dubai since Thursday in an attempt to put the world on track to meet the Paris goal of limiting global temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
At the core of the Cop28 UN climate summit in Dubai is a process known as the “global stocktake” – an assessment of progress towards meeting the emissions cuts needed to stay within the 1.5C limit. Many countries, however, have failed to make updates.

10 Billion Crabs Suddenly Vanished From the Bering Sea.
When scientists realized that nearly 10 billion snow crabs had gone missing from Bering Sea between 2018 to 2021, they weren’t sure where they could have gone. After searching for a potentially migrating population, however, they came to a much more unfortunate conclusion.
A new study published by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers in Science found that the billions of snow crabs weren’t finding a new home—they were suffering from what was likely the largest mortality collapse known to the species. Researchers have been aware of the crabs’ disappearance for a while, but the extent of the catastrophe and the exact causes behind it were previously unknown.

Climate crisis costing $16m an hour in extreme weather damage, study estimates
Analysis shows at least $2.8tn in damage from 2000 to 2019 through worsened storms, floods and heatwavesThe damage caused by the climate crisis through extreme weather alone has already cost $16m (£13m) an hour for the past 20 years, according to a new estimate.
Storms, floods, heatwaves and droughts have taken many lives and destroyed swathes of property in recent decades, with global heating making the events more frequent and intense. The new study is the first to calculate a global figure for the increased costs directly attributable to human-caused global heating.
It found average costs of $140bn (£115m) a year from 2000 to 2019, although the figure varies significantly from year to year. The latest data shows $280bn in costs in 2022. The researchers said lack of data, particularly in low-income countries, meant the figures were likely to be seriously underestimated. Additional climate costs, such as from crop yield declines and sea level rise, were also not included.

Antarctica is likely warming at almost twice the rate of the rest of the world and faster than climate change models are predicting, with potentially far-reaching implications for global sea level rise, according to a scientific study.
Scientists analysed 78 Antarctic ice cores to recreate temperatures going back 1,000 years and found the warming across the continent was outside what could be expected from natural swings.

‘Catastrophic’ loss: Huge colonies of emperor penguins saw no chicks survive last year as sea ice disappears
