"The usual instructions for cleaning a helmet call for washing it in mild soap and water, rinsing thoroughly, and air drying. We normally use a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water and a sponge...."

buy a new one.

you're not supposed to wash them. they look better if you keep the natural unwashed look.
just put it in the freezer overnight.

continually freezing it then letting it thaw may make it brittle and less effective in case of a crash

Run it through your dishwasher with the heat off.

honestly though, replace it.
the foam actual degrades over time and loses its protective qualities... most helmets say after 3 years but i'm sure that's overly cautious.

Really depends if the helmet is raw or not?

pull off the foamy padding bits from the inside (usually stuck in with velcro), throw in some warm soapy water to soak. After soaking a bit, scrunch them in your hands to pump water through them and get the grim/oils/salts out.
Rinse the salts off the styrofoam shell with lukewarm water. Try not to get soap on the foam, as there may be some chemicals that don't play well with it.
Rinse nylon straps in warm water, rub dish soap into them with fingers then rinse until they feel clean.
Put back together and let air dry. Should take about 5mins once you get the hang of it.
