anyone got any decent sources of inspiration for making a GTA style games ?
Talking about the first GTA that was played from a birdseye prospective
think its actually plan view i'm looking for and not birdseye view
Police Quest on the Amiga, used to love it
not really a gta game, but slicks n slide had a great driving style!
By which, you mean you want people to reminisce, posting images of beloved overhead-view 2d games from their choldhood - or, do you want some kind of game-creator's persepective?
Because.. I think you're probably wasting your time either way.
Not top down but Hunter was pretty much GTA3 in the military and in 1991. Was so awesome running over cows in a tank, blowing up a tramps house, hitting seagull with flares.
GTA has 3d maps but it just renders from a single perspective.
It's usually called pseudo-3d but that also covers 2.5d (usually 45 degree rotation), Doom, Goldeneye style y-shearing and a bunch of other techniques.
Check out 'jumping flash', similar era to GTA and flips between fixed frist person & birdseye views with real 3d models:
trying to remember some more... :s

Too much hate in such a cool thread.
