Impending DOOM

The Doom live experience caused controversy in 2007, when the highly acclaimed lyricist behind Madvillainy and The Mouse and the Mask allegedly sent an impostor to perform several of his dates in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Furious crowds booed and took their rage to the Internet, reporting that the impostor lip-synced to MF Doom’s songs. Self-proclaimed super-villain Doom posted no response to his fan’s rage until now, when he tells Rolling Stone that he couldn’t care less.
“Everything that we do is villain style,” Doom says. “Everybody has the right to get it or not get it. Once I throw it out, it’s there for interpretation. It might’ve seemed like it didn’t go well, but how do we know that wasn’t just pre-orchestrated so that we’re talking about it now? I tell you one thing: People are asking more now for live shows and I’m charging more, so it must’ve worked somewhere.”
- Treat people like shit and they'll beg for more - nice philosophy.lukus_W
- I always felt when I was at a hard rock / punk show the band spit on the crowd and treated me like shit...ideaist
- I fucking loved it all...ideaist
- Maybe yr right - but punk is about DIY rebellion .. not sending someone else in to rebel for you.lukus_W
- .. to me this just sounds like a cop-out and an excuse .. arrogance like this fucks me off.lukus_W
- Yeah; word is he walks amongst the crowd as people react to his impostor for kicks...ideaist
- well, at least he turns up ;)lukus_W

With a career modeled on the Marvel comics arch-villain Doctor Doom, the metal mask-wearing fortysomething remains characteristically cryptic about future live dates. “I tell you one thing: when you come to a Doom show, come expecting to hear music, don’t come expecting to see. You never know who you might see. It has nothing to do with a visual thing. Use your mind and think. I might be there. Next time I do a show, I might tell everybody to close they eyes. Use your own mind’s eye. That’s better than a camera phone, know what I’m sayin’?’ ”

I recently learned that MF Doom was also Zeb Love X who appeared on 3rd Bass' "Gas Face" back in the day.
Some of his stuff is good, but I think rap shows live are just horrible. In fact my taste for rap and hip hop has greatly diminished.- Which rap shows have you been to?ideaist
- Recently? Last 5-10 years?ideaist
- Yah, I first knew him as Zev Luv X before he blew up after Prefuse 73's debut album.dMullins
- You should listen to some KMD if you don't know much about his past in music.dMullins
- Yeah; got into him as Metal Face probably 6 - 7 years ago. Lyrical genious attracted me to him...ideaist
- No one like him around; and when he teams with Madlib it's epicness all around; Madvillain 3 soon?!ideaist
- We'll see. Got my fingers crossed!dMullins

For anyone who doesn't know about Dumile's rap history, you should look into KMD. Great shit, and proof that Doom was not an overnight success thanks to Prefuse 73. He was lyrically ill even in the late 90's.
If you don't wanna weed through some of the less interesting songs, just get "Peachfuzz," and "What A Nigga Know."

Funny thing about this whole "people don't buy my shit so I use body doubles" philosophy of his.
"Black Bastards," the sophomore album from KMD (his first group) was literally dropped from stores and marketing the week following Subroc's death (Doom's brother). The album was mostly unheard of for a few years, and then began getting bootlegged over time, eventually leading to Scott Heron learning about it, and finding out more about Doom. Heron did some asking around and eventually found Doom, and had him on the "Blacklist" track (w/ Aesop Rock) on his "Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives" album. If "Black Bastards" had never been bootlegged so heavily, it's a decent guess that Doom would still be largely unknown.
Not sure what my ultimate point is, other than its a tad ironic to me.

MOS DEF just pulled out. Checkout Scoundscapes. Doom still performing.
- Yeah; pointed that out last page... Mos Def is a drama queen...ideaist
- sorry... saw a post about Doom on soundscapes, but didn't read this whole thread.Centigrade
- Going Centigrade?!ideaist
- Nope, not my thing. Going to Efterklang though... which will be delicious.Centigrade
- Amazing; El Macombo correct? Like $10 too!!! Enjoy bud-e...ideaist
- I'm guessing Mos Def pulled out because what Doom is doing = whack?dMullins
- yes El Mocambo on the 6th. And for only 10 dollars. Will be awesome. Enjoy the Doom!Centigrade

Even though DOOM did come out and rap half a show, the fans still got jerked. The atmosphere was so ugly, a fight broke out near the stage before the first song was over; I lost count of the number of way-too-drunk dudes whose friends carried them out, not to mention the thrown drinks and walk-outs throughout the night. You could argue that DOOM fans set themselves up for this sort of thing, and that we ought to know better. But unlike the decision of which bank to use or which cell phone company to sign up with, fandom isn’t rational — we don’t let reason guide us when it comes to even our recreational passions. (This is probably also why REMG agreed to book DOOM; there are far easier ways to fill the Kool Haus than dealing with an artist whom you practically have to kidnap to bring onstage. To their infinite credit, they more or less pulled it off.)
We’ll most likely never see another Toronto DOOM show, and that’s not such a tragedy; up to now, promoters could plead idealism, but after last night, any promoter who agrees to book him is as guilty of exploiting DOOM’s fans as he is — and that’s pretty fucking guilty. I’m not saying we should burn the guy’s records or anything, but if he does show his face, um, mask in town again, I say fans should treat him like a true hero (say, Spider Man) would treat the real Dr. Doom: run up on him and punch him in his mouth. You can’t have your supervillain cake and eat it, too.

The dude in the very first video is definitely not DOOM. He moves around too much. I've seen DOOM several times, some from the front row and every time I've seen him he pretty much just stood there and rocked back poking his belly out.
It took me several shows to realize the truth: DOOM is boring as hell in concert. Not even worth bothering, in my opinion.- He moved around a lot last night; only for 7 songs though and over 2 hours late... : (ideaist

DOOM personifies the true meaning of being a villain. He just dont care if you like him or not.
I really just want that Ghostface/Doom album that's been on the works for years to drop.
- dMullins0
^ I think this is a pretty accurate statement here.
And I'm 110% behind you on the Ghostdoom album.

The last Ghostface album might have been the worst thing to ever invade my ears ever.

Now Ghostface was a pretty entertaining show. He ended the night with a 10 minute long anti-skank rant, then immediately invited all the ladies up on stage for a half hour of grinding. I LOLed.
