"Flash will destroy all paid apps if they allow it. "
I don't get this. Seems to be an argument that means nothing.
You really think the average user is going to even know how to find a good flash app online... then load up safari each time they want to use it?
The reason people are all app crazy on the iPhone is because of the simpleton nature of the Appstore.
Another thing is that free Flash apps and games are available right now, and have been for a decade or more, and I can't remember the last time I even used one... or know of anyone who does.

I like Apple.
I like Disney.
I like Pixar.- me too.twokids
- Well at least there are 2 of us.NickInfozure
- i just have a problem with the rhetoric, and what people think who love appletwokids
- inteliboy0
Also... the Appstore has been gold for small time developers and designers with a good idea. Why the anti-apple nerds are cheering out for free flash apps is beyond me.

Not really sure where this debate is headed.
Is the overall discussion about UXD or the control of content?The iphone safari browser is as far as (or was at time of launch) the closest experience to browsing the web on your mobile.
There was another thread talking about the difference between Apps and websites on here yesterday which made a good point.Apple can control the UXD but they can't ever control the content. People will design sites to fit whatever is most popular. Flash isn't the be-all and end-all of web video. Hopefully html5 will be where things are headed. Yes things will change, get over it. Hopefully Adobe will realise that their place should be providing tools to develop html5 content.
Apple is just trying to maintain a robust framework for users, by adopting the most stable or standards compliant conventions.
you'll still be able to watch porn on your iphone/ipad should you wish in the future. History has showed us that the porn industry often chooses the new medium. VHS over Betamax, DVD, then what next flash or something else?

Apple makes it's money from closed economies; which it creates, and has full control over.
It's more powerful than Disney - because it's firmly routed in the digital world. Disney is having to make a transition.

yeah, but Apple is having a problem with transition as well. How can they say the iPad is 'holding the internet in your hands' when significant portions of it they will not allow. The example of the NYTimes they used was incomplete (no flash), and, it was shown, they faked it (they were busted)
they are at some kind of crossroads i think

@twokids;
Apple is one of the only companies who've been able to make money from selling digital content.
They pioneered the model with iTunes - went on to duplicate it with the iPhone, and now they're going to strike gold a third time with the iPad.
They have no interest in providing users with a full experience - because they make their money from taking a percentage from sold applications and multimedia.
To be able to create an environment that's conducive to selling content - they need to artificially regulate the market conditions.
The market conditions need to be _appealing_ to digital content creators - who will have various obligations re. current customer base and brand / image (hence no soft porn).
The market conditions also need to be _technically_ controllable. If flash was available - it would be the equivalent to officially sanctioning jailbroken iPhones and iPad. Any application would be able to run without Apple's permission.
In my opinion, not supporting flash is a business decision.

- Seriously?? Why do you think apple exists, if it isn't to create money? It's basic business theory.lukus_W
- duckofrubber0
So what? Apple is its own company and is free to operate its business however it sees fit (within ethical reason). If you don't like this then don't buy their products, I guess.
- twokids0
@lukus_w:
Of course it is. But they pretend it isn't.I have no problem with them except for the part where they say the iPad is 'holding the internet in your hands' when significant portions of it they will not allow, for no other reason than they want to control content. I will not buy a device that says 'I will tell you what you can see on the internet'.
On the other hand, I will tell you i am not so comfortable with Adobe either as they have a huge monopoly with not only graphics tools but how video is distributed on the Internet.
Overall, a pretty interesting struggle!
I have my money on Google. I think they have a better grasp of the open source vision, which is what makes the internet really tick.

are we still upset they took our wobbly boobs?

By stopping the porn goons, you're closing the doors to all the evils that come with it. If the iPhone world turned into the porn world that exists on the web from Nasty popup ads you can't close and reopens til you have to force quit, ugly blinking banners, Age verifications, spam, spam, spam. Does your wife really want that on her iPhone?
- lukus_W0
@duckofrubber;
I think that's a naive point of view. It _is_ it's own company but - sooner or later - through mergers, acquisitions and exponential growth, a corporation is going to come along which holds more power and influence that many western governments.
Why is this a problem?
Well, while many people are critical of governments which are voted into office, there are still responsibilities and duties that our politicians are tied to. They have to be accountable.
Corporations generally only need to be accountable to their shareholders. As corporations become larger and more powerful - their ability to influence new markets grows. Competition is hindered when monopolies are allowed to develop - and we end up with a corporate monoculture.
You say that 'apple is allowed to operate its business however it sees fit' - but when market conditions are such, that the only way to make money from a mobile device is via Apple .. developers and content producers are forced to accept the rules that Apple lay down.
In this kind of situation, it's disingenuous to argue that people have freedom.
- ernexbcn0
Apple just created a new 'explicit' category for developers to submit their blue apps, my guess is they are going to filter by 17+ and this new category

Pics or it didn't happen.

I do agree with you lukus_W. I'm just not sure if I buy THIS as being a real danger to freedom of choice, although I certainly understand the chicken little scenario of it setting a precedent or being a dangerous precursor.
Let them be puritanical and hypocritical. If there is enough outrage, competition will arise. There will be other options. Giants topple eventually—unless they are banks, I suppose.
