Can I just say that the site needs the help of an IA expert, a UX designer and a rockstar graphic designer?

How do measure fame? If we're talking about designers that are really "famous" we'd be throwing out names like Coco Chanel and other fashion design icons. There are a few books written about Paul Rand, not to mention countless references or his timeless style, but even then the average person doesn't know his name. If we're talking about who the best designer is it'd be a different story, but I don't think that even then anyone could possibly agree on a single individual.
Conclusion: this is pointless.
- exactly!
but, since Freddie Mercury happens to be a graphic designer, this is not longer an issueMeeklo - issueMeeklo

/\ There are few topics being discussed. Design in general, measuring fame and the unanimous decision.
Since we are talking Graphic Design, we can forget about the broad spectrum of 'design' for this topic.
Now measuring fame has a variety of different measurements that can placed on a specific individual. There are no rules and each individual is unique, based on prior experience and exposure. These exposures to "communication" can be drawn out in numerous ways. Print, web, broadcast, radio, word-of-mouth, etc...
However it is quite POSSIBLE to get ONE single person from the results of a vote. A(n) unanimously result could occur, however due to the number of choices, the odds are slim. We could narrow the choices down to a few select. But we're not trying to make an immediate and ultimate conclusion here. You can formulate your own speculations that are more than subjective or not.
In this case, a person's work could reflect his or her walk towards fame and so far Paul Rand is on top (2/17/2010) 8:15pm. However his death could have easily attributed to his glory. Many great legends achieved their fame, after death. For example Van Gogh who died poor, yet his paintings are worth millions today. However in my opinion, Rand's fame could be easily attributed to the fact that his logos are strongly branded in today's corporate and consumer culture. From large corps like IBM to UPS.
However in conclusion, there maybe no ONE aspect that attributes to the measurement of fame, but rather an eco-system that work together to form the basis of fame. Point systems are still pointless because they do not accurately measure the true nature of the sport and many issues can derive in trying to measure anything. Even the measurement of one's weight varies depending on gravity.
- and that's the long version of what I saidmonospaced
- I think paul Rand is famous because he was a pioneer in identity and visual designJosev

famous?
i think you're referring to quality of work.
to use the term "famous", you're just asking which is most popular.
i think some designers are more successful than others. how successful a designer is, is based on the briefs they're given and how they interpret the brief.
you may be a great problem solver, but never get the right brief. or you may get a great brief, but not have the ability to come up with an innovative solution.
so a better question may be, "which designer has the greatest ability to realise a brief?".

Most pointless poll 2010.
Funny, David Carson is on the list but nowhere can I find a mention of 'flash in the pan'?

Love that it just simply says: "his" name. How blatantly sexist.
