I am sure I will get timelined for linking this news, but just saw this today on the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/techn…

Serves me right for not filtering posts, reported last year: http://www.qbn.com/topics/600910…

Microsoft doesn't support IE6 on it's own web office apps

About f'in time.
- Now if only web designers would catch up, that'd be great.luckyorphan
- Web Designers catch up? It's not our fault if clients are still using IE6 and cannot change this.seeessess

Help kill IE6 with http://ie6update.com/

I know I come off as the radical with my views on IE (I dislike all of them), but can we QBN web peeps agree as a group to longer support IE 6?
- mydo0
i've been dealing recently with a large German multinational. ALL of their machines, including the laptops of the directors - will only run ie6.
some head of IT there needs to be raped and shanked.
- Amicus0
we need to send out brute squads to deal with the problem.

Shaming companies away from IE 6 :

IE6 is still around because governments and business cried when MS tried to do a mandatory updgrade as part of a windows update.. They then stopped working on it all together and the gap was too huge between 6 + 7 as a result of Vista taking so long to come out. Vista being SHIT then further degraded the situation unfortunately.
ie. lazy tech guys would of had to stop playing with rubber dart guns and actually do some work , so they made it seem like a world of warcraft ending event to their supervisors (who obviously know nothing). These supervisors then sent nasty e-mails to MS who didn't want to lose their customers and the rest is history...

I don't mind ie6 so much. I'm more annoyed by the constant stream of new browsers, each with their own bugs and quirks: Firefox PC/Mac, Chrome PC/Mac, Safari PC/mac, IE7, IE8, etc.
All of them need to fuck right off and stop making my job so complicated.
- stewdio0
@monNom. If by "complicated" you mean "easier" and "standards compliant" then I agree. (Aside from IE 7 and 8 of course.)
- dijitaq0
ie6 should die and stop making my job complicated.
- eating_tv0
Yes. dumb down our job, make it easier. Please, browsergods! I want to be able to make whatever and get bored at doing it, like everyone else doing any other job!
- markeebee0
Frankly, I can't wait for IE6 to disappear off the radar.
Getting rid of IE6 isn't going to suddenly turn web development into a tedious, unskilled profession—it just means we will be able to make better looking and performing sites because we don't have to dumb down our CSS and include weird, bug-exploiting hacks in our code.
- Be pragmatic .. IE6 sites don't need to looks exactly the same as sites on well-behaved browsers.lukus_W
- I agree—but try telling that to a client who uses IE6 when they realise it looks different on other people's computers.markeebee
- To that client, I'd explain the idea behind graceful degradation; and suggest if they want things to look the same - I can reduce all sites to the standard of IE6.lukus_W
- the same - I can reduce all sites to the standard of IE6.lukus_W
- learn to develop in a way that takes out the issues of ie6. its not difficult it just takes practice and patienceStugoo
- and
progressively enhance not gracefully degradeStugoo - So rather than just encouraging clients to upgrade a nine year old web browser, I should offer to make all my work uglier and less functional to accommodate it? I'm sorry, I don't agree—perhaps a few years ago I would have, but not anymore.markeebee
- less functional to accomodate it? I'm sorry, but I don't agree—perhaps a few years ago I would have, but not now.markeebee
- http://dowebsitesnee…lukus_W
- It's not about your client's browser .. it's about your client's customer's browsers.lukus_W
- In the real world, it's both.markeebee
- Re. reducing all functionality to IE6 standard -> it's something most sane clients wouldn't expect you to carry out.lukus_W
- The point is .. you can get your client to upgrade their browser, but you can't get all the people working for companies listed at http://ie6list.com/ to do the same.lukus_W
- http://ie6list.com/ to do the same.lukus_W
- uglier? sorry but its been a long time since I've sacrificed a majory part of design because of ie6.Stugoo
- I was referring mainly to the ugliness of my code; though visually I 've had a lot of issues with borders, cursors and lack of PNG support in IE6 too.markeebee
- PNG support in IE6 too.markeebee
- easy work aroundsStugoo

@stewdio: 'standards compliant' has not made my life 'easier'. Not one of the current 'standards compliant' browsers behaves identically to another. As a result, testing and modification is required for each and every browser release, adding needless hacks and workarounds to ensure consistent presentation on all computers.
give me one faulty browser over 8 'standards compliant' permutations anyday.
- lukus_W0
I like IE6 - it's existence ensures that web designers / front-end developers get paid more.
- markeebee0
@monNom I'm surprised you're having all these problems—everything I've built in the last year or so has rendered perfectly in IE7/8, Firefox, Chrome and Safari with no hacks whatsoever. And mostly Opera too, though we don't really bother testing in that too much as such a miniscule percentage of visitors use it.
- Stugoo0
You guys are all mislead. IE6 is the best browser out there. It's so tight that you could carry water in it. You just don't know how to develop for it.
noobs
- Stugoo0
A note on standards compliance.
Wouldn't it be nice if we had like one system of colours that was recognised all over the world so that if you called japan for a colour they would match it exactly...
oh wait...
