Actually Adobe should start making their own devices. A great player that sends and receives PDFs and plays interactive flash and video files. No touchscreen, so no need to rewrite their entire language to deal with touch gestures.

@SteveJobs
first, i'm still learning lisp, i know java.
second, i agree with your statement.
third, in my original argument (if you reread it) i said that as3 WAS better for game development.its just that i despise the fact that people consider languages that have been poorly implemented in the past (javascript), to be shitty languages in the present.
so just to clarify, we are both making the same argument.

@ayport If there's a "killer app" for it then yes. Chrome does automatic background updates so if it's not pre-installed it's easy for Google to silently add it in there. Not sure if that also applies to the Chrome plug-in that runs inside IE, but I suppose the percentage of people using that particular setup is rather small.
As for regular IE, Safari, Firefox... If YouTube offered some sort of special content (not sure what it would be... videos playing on warped surfaces?) then users might download the plug-in because the all-authoritative YouTube told them it was cool.
Or there's just straight-up advertising. Google has the money to really push whatever they want to sell through TV, billboards etc. I don't think I've ever seen a browser plug-in advertised that way, but if they wanted to I'm sure they could. Additionally because they dominate online text-ads they could use that as well.
Will people download 03D if Google decided to push it? Not sure. But you can certainly make an argument that if Google wanted to force a plug-in on people they could.

@spraycan. Google O3D does indeed support hardware acceleration. The plug-in installs its own Javascript interpreter to accomplish this. Read more here: http://code.google.com/apis/o3d/…

let's put it like this. adobe/macromedia have spent years working on flash os/browser integration and have substantial market penetration. their product has an extensive api which will probably grow to meet the demanding needs of game development and this is no small task. have you ever done any OpenGL programming? DirectX? It's going to take a competing technology a long time not just to develop a formidable alternative, but also a lot of time and money marketing the technology just to get where Adobe is today. And by the time they do, Adobe, who will have been watching their competition closely along the way, will be further along with their own answer to those competitors.

the ipad could lead to the end of apple as we know them. they may become a niche player over this issue. They have walked this tightrope of being proprietary and yet appearing to support the open source mentality for many years. the ipad could be their undoing over the lack of support for flash and java. two interesting reads below.

@spraycan. You seem to have a lot of energy / enthusiasm and that's great. You're passionate about your coding. But please understand that some of us have been around the block more than you have when it comes to programming. When we say that JavaScript is beautiful maybe you should ask what the secret is rather than simply railing so heavily against it.
And believe me, Java is no prize. It actually pains me that Processing was written in Java (rather than say, NodeBox which was written in Python) but I do understand why Ben and Casey chose Java and I do support Processing. (...even taught a course in Processing at NYU's Interactive Telecommunication Program before moving out of New York.) Given your little jaunt about "languages" vs. "scripts" you really ought not to hold up Java, which runs on a Virtual Machine, as your idol of code machismo. Either use original C or assembly; do your own garbage collection.

highlight:
When Steve J. made the comments about HTML5 being the future, he didn't bother to explain that this statement really refers to the most widespread use of Flash today, that being Video. Perhaps he didn't explain this purposely, so that many misinformed end users who want to watch Hulu on their iPhones would unleash their rage against Flash. Which is exactly what has been happening..It is annoying and I lost respect for Steve.
The HTML5 stack (html, css and JS) will NOT be a direct replacement for Flash. I have been developing Flash content for over 10 years, I am also very competent in JS. I cringe thinking about using JS for tasks where ActionScript can accomplish the same thing in 50% less code. There are tasks that will be very difficult if not impossible to achieve with JS and CSS. For rudimentary animations and JQuery-like functionality, sure, HTML5 can be a viable option instead Flash. But for complex games and RIAs, I just don't see it. Actionscript has evolved into a robust, full featured language.
The other important thing is that the Flash player is updated by Adobe periodically to address any issues that may arise. How will they update/improve HTML5 spec if it becomes the norm and Flash went bye-bye?? They won't. You have to wait for HTML6 and all the browsers to support it. Which means you end up waiting 5-10 years. Great way to bring us back to 1998. No thanks, I'll stick with Flash for now.
As much as open standards are a worthy goal, I don't see this panning out the way they are saying...
My two cents.

think of how much data would be used to download flash content on a mobile device... hence why I think it'll never go mobile
- ernexbcn0
Adobe will eventually create an authoring tool that takes advantage of the HTML5 canvas element + javascript. I haven't read about it but I'd bet money that the next versions of the Flash IDE will have those capabilities.

I am not passionate about Java, but when i see so many stupid comparisons (like comparing java to as3)(yes someone with no real understanding of coding would compare both because of their similar syntax maybe, but that's an extremely basic pov).
Java is a great programing language, it is the only programing language that permits you to do many different things with a high level programming approach( sockets, internet application, http server build, desktop application , OS build etc...). btw i mainly code in C those days, and i consider Java a pretty well written abstraction so i dont see the problem with the virtual machine.
maybe low level programming is not for you !
