A little over your budget, but not much.

Again, over budget, but comes highly recommended if you put the effort in. Just ask moth.

I'm currently in love with the panasonic ones. such a nice wide lens with plenty zoom! but then again you can't beat the colours of the Canon powershot. even the canon ixus is awesome

I agree with Sony, utter pile of shit.

georges, Ive not used em, I've a lower spec lumix the DMC FX12, which is a lovely little thing but recently I was looking into getting a new cam. If I had the cash I'd go with the lumix gf1, for its interchangeable lenses, and for pocketability get the 20mm pancake. However I did look into the LX3 as an upgrade for mine, and its probably around the price range I can afford and seems like a great cam for that price.
However, the sigma was getting very good motions and after asking around on here, its has been very highly recommended but its seems less point and shoot and more stop, compose, get the pic right and shoot. Moth recommended it to me and seems very happy with it.
As he said to me, go to flickr, search the pics and see what the camera can do, instead of just reading the reviews.

I was recommended the Sony DSC-HX1 the other day. The specs look pretty good - might be worth looking into.

what's the heft on one of those like? I'd like to get a nice compactish camera, but one that's a reasonable weight as years of drinking petrol have taken their inevitable toll on the steadiness of my hands...

http://www.usa.canon.com/consume…Canon s90, large sensor size, almost the size of slr cameras, F2.0.
Thats my dream point and shoot. The only problem is no HD Video...

about the sigma dp1:
fuck the sigma. slow as shite (3s to turn on, focus, shoot), can't focus in anything but bright light, resolution is from 2001 (4 megapixels give me a break), noisy as hell above iso 200, white balance is terrible for low-pressure sodium lights (like pretty much any city at night), battery life isn't great, and the shit on top of the cake: f4 is not very wide.
waste of money. i owned a panasonic lx2 before the sigma (it got stolen) - that camera was much better, much more responsive. i wanted a pocketable camera that i can pull out and shoot with, like a digital version of the olympus stylus epic. the sigma is not it.
