If you do go with the 450D, I'd get just the body without the kit lens and invest in a slightly better lens.

id say around 400-500 GB£ is thr budget.
i really know nothing about digital slr and want to explore... everyone keep s saying how great canons are and the 450s been mentioned a couple of times...
any reason why yoou recommend going for the non-standard 18-55 canon lens supplied? that was he one i was looking at!
what would you recommend? camera and lens wise!

The 450D is a great camera, it doesn't do video though, where a couple newer canons and nikons will give you video as well as comparable quality stills.
As for the lens, it's decent, but it's not constant aperture (critical for video) and doesn't open up that wide, you won't get the super shallow depth of field and nice bokeh you'll get with a better, wider aperture lens.
I'd maybe start out with the Canon 50mm 1.8 prime, depends on what you want to shoot though.

if you are concerned about the cost, try Pentax or Olympus. you can get more features for the price, and the quality pretty close now a days (in some regards better). i have a pentax k-7 which has hd video and a mic imput, and is 1,000 less than the closest canon or nikon with the same features. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/…

From Pentax K7 review:
# Measurably and visibly more noise than competition at high ISOs
# More RAW noise than predecessor (but in line with competition)
# AF speed not quite up with the fastest in classNoise and slow/unusable-in-low-light AF were the reasons I sold my Pentax *istDS and bought K100Ds hoping for improvement.
Then for the same reasons I sold K100Ds and bought K10D.
Then in the end I bought Canon 5D just to test it. Instantly after that I decided to sell K10D and all Pentax gear, looking back only on occasions like today.I wish them success in their struggle with noise/AF as these are fantastic cameras otherwise and I took loads of good images with them.
- I might have said "oh fuck it" when finally decided to go Canon, don't remember - but it would suit.raf

Keep in mind that, generally speaking, once you chose between two of the major platforms, i.e. Canon and Nikon, you are pretty much committed to staying there. Either is a good choice - but, once you make and start committing to their way of doing things (i.e. each has a different lens mounting system) that's it.
First DSLR for me was the Digital Rebel from Canon (at the time the first DSLR under a grand); currently shooting with a 5D Mk.II and based on my commitment to the lenses I've bought over the years it is with Canon I will stay.
I have owned Nikons (my first digital camera - Coolpix 950), Sonys (I'm currently having fun with a WX1), Panasonics (thoroughly enjoying a LX3) and so on. It can become a disease so be careful...

as far as I'm aware, the Nikon D90 is the only camera with live veiw and video, but can still handle pro lenses without built-in autofocus lenses
