Keep in mind that, generally speaking, once you chose between two of the major platforms, i.e. Canon and Nikon, you are pretty much committed to staying there. Either is a good choice - but, once you make and start committing to their way of doing things (i.e. each has a different lens mounting system) that's it.
First DSLR for me was the Digital Rebel from Canon (at the time the first DSLR under a grand); currently shooting with a 5D Mk.II and based on my commitment to the lenses I've bought over the years it is with Canon I will stay.
I have owned Nikons (my first digital camera - Coolpix 950), Sonys (I'm currently having fun with a WX1), Panasonics (thoroughly enjoying a LX3) and so on. It can become a disease so be careful...
