I'm looking to buy something decent under $500. Any advice? Is Takamine G series any good?

taylor's are good for the price and in your range.

Electro acoustic or acoustic?

mack head neal... something like that

taylors are the best, imo, hands down. you might have a hard time finding one for $500, but you might be able to get one used for that...

I've got a lovely fender 12 string cd100, which i keep at home.
Taylors are nice, very nice, takamine have a damn nice set, not sure of their prices tho.
I've even had my eyes on a telecoustic...

a friend has a takamine brandnew for 350 euros, that'd be around 500$ i guess. very decent

I suggest going to a store that mainly sells acoustics, and try some out. There are so many to choose from just based on price.

I'd recommend anything in the Masterbilt series by Epiphone. I went into Guitar Center (lame, I know) a few years ago and sat down for a few hours playing acoustics. This one, in particular, sounds as good as any of the 1000 dollar acoustics I've played.
I think they start out at $500, so you know it isn't complete shit.

Martin or Taylors are also very good, but they tend to be expensive.

Washburn acoustics are severely underrated. Epiphone's are extremely durable (my dad's has been around for about 30 years and still plays great), Martin's are sort of the flagship for sound.

Takamine and Yamaha make good acoustics. Nothing wrong with those.

Choosing a guitar is such a personal choice. No matter what people say here you gotta go with what feels good and sounds good to you.
That being said, I LOVE my Taylor Big Baby: http://www.taylorguitars.com/Gui…
I've had mine for about 8 or 9 years now and still play it all the time. It has a bolt-on neck, which may seem a little weird at first but it's really not a problem to get used to. It's a very, very bright sounding guitar so it's not for everyone but I love the tone. When I bought mine they retailed for around $350, but I know they've become more expensive since then.
The other awesome thing about Taylors is that they're made like 15 miles from my house.

Are you an experienced player or just starting out?
Either way, it's best just to go to your local guitar store, try out the ones in your price range, and pick which you like best. Brands only really matter when you start getting into the higher price ranges... Taylor, for example, has some of the best sounding acoustic guitars I've ever heard, but the ones that I want are 1,500 - 2,000 and up...

also, as far as sound is concerned i've noticed taylors have a better range compared to martin (unless you're looking at the d-28 or dh-28 (both of which are way out of your price range)). martin's typically have a lower, full-bodied sound.
these things are good to consider in addition to the acoustics of the room you'll be playing in: hardwood floors/concrete/carpet/etc.

Actually, personally I think the taylors in that lower range aren't worth it. The taylors really shine when you hit the £1500/£2k (GBP) mark. before that, the sound just doesn't stand out.
