Any graphic designers that use an iMac for their work? (Adobe CS4 - 50-100MB files) Will I regret not going to a Mac Pro to do design work?

3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB SDRAM like a boss over here; works like a charm for all my photoshop, illustrator, flash needs. Video encoding is a touch of a bitch but it's acceptable...

i would go for the imac with quad core!

what's your budget?
- $2500?akrokdesign
- $2000?akrokdesign

My Imac rocks pretty hard. Quite quick for all my needs (which sound similar to yours.)
My home one is still rockin cs2, which misbehaves sometimes on osx 10.5

I'm on an iMac and it does the job admirably.
3 ghz duo with 4gb ram. Eats up PSDs in CS3. The new ones are pretty snappy and have better screens too.

27" is nice also. woohoo.

My iMac works just fine.

The benchmarks on the new i7 (quad) iMac show that it beats out most of the Mac Pros in performance.
This revelation is a big surprise to many people, especially since the iMac is less than the price of the tower and comes with a 27" LED. Honestly, I think it might be the perfect design machine at the moment. I want.

is there a big difference between i5 and i7?
- except $200. :-Pakrokdesign

- that's with 4GB RAM?akrokdesign
- This is MacWorld's benchmark results for Apple's machines as-shipped. So, I assume yes.monospaced
- pretty awesome.akrokdesign
- I mean...a quad core beating out Apple's 8-core beast? Unfuckingbelievable.monospaced
- it is. :-Dakrokdesign
- I wouldn't read to much into this graph. i7 is not 2x the old 24"... unless you just counting clock cycles times cores... real world maybe 5-10%monNom
- real world is probably closer to 5-10%monNom

My iMac is fine for everything I need it for. 4gb ram, got it two years ago, still running strong, even stronger now with a Cinema Display attached. :)
Mac Pro is excessive for most designers' needs. Unless you're doing hardcore animation and/or video shit, the iMac is a great machine.

by a macbook pro instead and hook it up to a 30"
- Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel) only $1800 plus tax.akrokdesign
- that should be around the same price, right?Josev
- around there. yep.akrokdesign
- with the monitor. yes. hahakrokdesign

@mono, plus its got video inputs that the old one didnt have. Its like a real monitor now. Really sick machine.
- monospaced0
@Bullitt
Are you smoking crack?
a) The MacBook Pro is not as fast as the i7
b) The MacBook Pro costs as much as the i7
c) The MacBook Pro only has a 17" monitor
d) A 30" Cinema Display is MORE than the i7 by itself

The new rules for buying a Mac
http://www.macworld.com/article/…"The New Rule: For many power users who once bought a Power Mac by default, the Mac Pro is overkill, and an iMac or a MacBook Pro is powerful enough..."

Designers have unlimited budgets. Spend as much as you can.

Why It's Gotten Straight Stupid to Buy a Mac Pro
- Bullitt0
why you want an imac anyway? those things only come with a 15" screen in silly translucent colors...
