I could see this working if they built a swipe into the iphone, but having to connect that little plastic thing seems like too much work

that top pic is wrong isn't it? the audio jack port is on the top of the iphone ???? [at least my 3G is]

At the Apple store they use credit card reader attachments on iPod Touches so you can check out anywhere in the store.
