So, what's the best tool to use for kerning the type for a logo? Any tricks or recommendations?

I mainly work on the web, but I'm working on new business cards. Should I do the kerning in Illy, or InDesign? How do I select the individual letters and move them around?
Yes, I am asking that basic of a question.

In Illy make outlines and move letters around?
- NOOOOOOOOOO...monospaced

- hahaha!
Use the Character palate. There's an option in there to adjust kerning. Highlight an individual letter, adjust, move to next letter.mynameisdave

print it and try looking at it upside down, sometimes you can see odd gaps a little better... and kerning is the spacing between 2 letters, so place your cursor in between.
- i meant characters, not letters.bulletfactory

and squint - you'll see odd spaces, tooalicetheblue

indesign or illustrator will work...
... don't convert to outlines though... just use your alt and arrow keys to adjust your kerning...
... you may need to change the kerning distance per keystroke in your preferences

I meant "expand" not "outlines"alicetheblue - gotcha :) good practice to keep your text live as long as possible so you can come back and edit later w/out starting overPonyBoy

Just click in between the letters you want to kern (so you get the flashing | beam) and then adjust the kerning. You won't be highlighting any text unless you're tracking it.

The fact that you don't know the method of kerning type with software makes me question whether you should be kerning type in the first place. I'm also shocked and appalled by the terrible advice here! Only ismith provided the correct answer, and even that would throw a newbie off if he didn't know exactly which area of the type palette actually affects kerning as opposed to tracking. So disappointing.
- < look at that rag!monospaced
- ponyboy was the first to answer correct = wins prizeinkpink
- yeah, he mentioned the keyboard method, which is really just a shortcut for the ACTUAL method ismith describedmonospaced
