clients don't have the vaguest idea who's good

i really can't comprehend why this is a complaint anyway. ideally ALL designers would suck but yourself, so you have less competition and higher demand
i rejoice every time a new shit designer gets cranked outta the factory
- scarabin0
and i wouldn't say clients don't know what good design is. small clients who don't matter might not know, but they're small fry and couldn't afford good design anyway.
marketing people who are good at what they do realize the importance of good design, realize that ideas are nothing without good execution. THESE are the people who will seek out a good designer and pay a premium for the service.
little shit designers don't even figure into it

designing is nothing. selling it, now THAT separates the good designers from the bad.

People don't know what designers do. Even a lot of people who call themselves designers, but are in fact illustrators. They 'dress' things, instead of designing them. So there's actually not that many designers that suck.

If schools are churning out shit students I think part of it has to do with the overwhelming range of subjects/skills you can learn in this space.
Let's say I'm a young wannabe designer entering school in 2010. In my 4 years of design education (keeping in mind that in this country at least 60% of my time will be spent taking generic liberal arts classes), do I focus on:
-Graphic design fundamentals (form, layout etc)
-Design history
-Typography
-Print production techiques
-HCI/ Usability
-HTML/ CSS/ JS
-Flash animation and/or application development
-Illustration
-Photography
-Video production
-3DWhile obviously not everyone needs to know all of that, those are all skills that are considered part of our profession. Has a school even come up with a curriculum that successfully integrates these skills in a way that makes sense? I think that's why you'll find most people who are successful in this field have learned a lot of what they know on their own.
