If schools are churning out shit students I think part of it has to do with the overwhelming range of subjects/skills you can learn in this space.

Let's say I'm a young wannabe designer entering school in 2010. In my 4 years of design education (keeping in mind that in this country at least 60% of my time will be spent taking generic liberal arts classes), do I focus on:

-Graphic design fundamentals (form, layout etc)
    -Design history
    -Typography
    -Print production techiques
    -HCI/ Usability
    -HTML/ CSS/ JS
    -Flash animation and/or application development
    -Illustration
    -Photography
    -Video production
    -3D

While obviously not everyone needs to know all of that, those are all skills that are considered part of our profession. Has a school even come up with a curriculum that successfully integrates these skills in a way that makes sense? I think that's why you'll find most people who are successful in this field have learned a lot of what they know on their own.

    • not to mention you need to be part designer/part developer and have 3-5 yrs experience to get...identity
    • even a junior position it seems!identity
    • I think a lot of recent grads are gonna end up getting "shut out" of the field altogether and end up working at the GAP or something...ukit
