23) Most designers suck because they don't care.

So if we can officially say that most designers suck, which designers don't suck and why?
- d_rek0
Well... I suppose bitching about it will help.

Just so some of you don't think I'm some unreasonable snob, this is kind of work I'm talking about. This is from a "professional" who offers his services as a freelancer. He graduated a few years ago.
This is, from my experience doing portfolio reviews, the average quality of work from a recent graduate designer.
I just thought we all knew this. So I didn't want to post work and embarrass somebody right off the bat.

The problem, is 'success in commercialism' has become the yard stick to judge 'success in life'.
Graphic designers want to produce commercially viable designs - efficiently (for less effort / money). A lot of the time, borrowing an idea which has been drummed into the public's consciousness - and has already been deemed effective - is easiest, more cost effective and more reliable that innovating. It gets the job (of selling stuff) done.
Until we (and society in general) comes up with a _different_ yard stick, design is likely to become even more mediocre, crass and derivative.
Marketing and advertising are ruining everything we have. They're created shallow, two dimensional assholes out of most citizens of this world (sex on one axis, money on the other).
I would love it if people in advertising and marketing became as reviled as traffic wardens or estate agents. They deserve it. TV advertising in the UK has become so completely and utterly spew-inducing. I can barely watch it without prerecording the programmes I want to see (allowing commercials to be skipped).
And the nauseating choice of faux-twee soundtracks that advertisers choose to sell electricity, bread, broadband, financial services, soft-drinks also makes me want to vomit. Advertisers are so desperate to create an 'emotional bond' between an unsuspecting public and their bullshit wares. Cutesy graphics - false modesty - naive typographic choices suggesting their campaign has been penned directly from the hand of a two year old ('children don't lie / must be true'). They'll stoop to any level. A bunch of complete and utter CUN*S.
Hmmm... that turned into a bit of a rant. Sorry.

designer ≠ artist. if the client is happy and loves the work, the designer succeeded. wtf talking about "my work is better than yours" anyway? nacci, why you care? do you fear your work is.... average?
imho, there's no reason to diss other creatives around who make a living out of their work. blame the clients - they use to buy our work for peanuts, that's why most of them get crap work

If work likes bothers you so much, you should better ignore it and just enjoy threads like POTD identity design or pic of the day design. I understand your critic but try to put that energy in something positive instead of this finger pointing. Otherwise you are just a graphic waldorf and statler. I try to improve my work on a daily basis, sometimes its works, sometimes i doesn't because of so many factors. Maybe start a positive thread with constructive tips & links. Now you are just being a very sad & sour person.

Kiggen, thanks for the rant, but take your hurt feelings out of my thread.
This is a discussion about why designers suck.
- I don't have hurt feelings, you think i care what you think?Kiggen
- I didn't know we could own a thread! Where can I get one?!luckyorphan

I am thankful for all the crappy designers!
They are the ones that keep the good designers in business! If everyone was an amazing designer think of how much less work there would be left to fix and make better!

because it takes years to become good at something. Some designers don't live, breathe, eat, dress design, they just do it as a job and are happy.
Be grateful that they suck and you (think you) don't. It makes you feel beter about yourself. While we all love to laugh at them kids it's really arrogant to assume that you've never put out anything that didn't suck, whether it be because the client specifically requested comic sans or you were in a hurry at 4am.

Snob:
1. a person who imitates, cultivates, or slavishly admires social superiors and is condescending or overbearing to others.
2. a person who believes himself or herself an expert or connoisseur in a given field and is condescending toward or disdainful of those who hold other opinions or have different tastes regarding this field: a musical snob. Not fibonacci at all.

Look at my work. You'll probably think I suck.
But I make a living doing what I love just like you do.
- I had a look.Jnr_Madison
- was i right?eb6
- Ah sorry, just kidding, didn't actually look.Jnr_Madison
- Looks ok to me evan, some of the font choice has a bit more to be desired. It definitely doesn't suck.meffid

"graphic design" is the medium of problem solving. Solving the problem leads to MOST people creating work that will appease their clients and thus, solve their OWN personal problem of 'getting the project accepted and paid for'... Now, this is a case of tremendous ego in what should otherwise be a pretty ego-less profession (remember design school kids? a great designer should be invisible in his/her work?)

eb6, the only reason you're calling me a snob is because you're insecure.
Your work does not suck. There are some questionable pieces that probably should be pruned, but it is the type of work I'd call average or decent.
- I'm not insecure at all. I know my abilities and am fine with them.eb6

Accounting vs. design.
1. You can fake/copy design, you can't legally fake being good at accounting.
2. There isn't exactly a booming population of awesome accounting portals, where people rip one another's ideas off day in and out.
3. Is there really an accounting community? You can't really tell an accountant that his work sucks, because it's almost always privatized. The quarterly reports, etc., are mostly all you ever see—not his ability to bend numbers.
4. Are people really on a high horse about being a great accountant? I doubt it. See item #2.
5. You can be a graphic designer with zero formal training, and start working professionally pretty easily. With most other "professional occupations," this isn't the case.
You could replace accounting with most professions. Not sure the point I'm trying to make here—if any at all—but those are some things that come to mind for me in trying to understand this retarded discussion.

Most of the better designers I went to school with couldn't handle or conform to corporate culture. Two of the best designer/artists I know, one works in a warehouse and the other is a Beer Distributer because they cant stand marketing/advertising people.
- Interesting. The most talented, creative designer I know has never had a real industry job.seed
