OSFA if you're talking about the pix you posted... i put notes next to them.
Also, try toplighting with a single medium-sized soft source. It looks like the kind of light they used in those pictures. Here's a photo I took with a 22" beauty dish above and to the left of the model, slightly in front of her:

He discusses some of his gear and why it's important.

@dropdown:
oh my god. what a corporate shill. "That’s why I started with Pocket Wizard and have stayed with Pocket Wizard. Their commitment to quality, reliability and the ability for all of their products to work together is unmatched." give me a fucking break. he talks like a marketing department.
his advice is MAYBE relevant only to pro photographers who can afford top-of-the-line equipment, and if you're a pro photographer who can afford top-of-the-line equipment, you have enough experience to not need advice from some blogger-photographer.
for everyone else, it's just consumerist inducement to overspend.
bigtrick says: thumbs down.
- umm he is a pro photographer. And i was under the impression that QBN had some pros as well. No?dropdown
- as a complete fucking noob to this shit. i found it an interesting read. Along with the other gear articles.dropdown

dropdown - yeah, i'm not dissing his photography... just the relevance of his gear advice.bigtrick
- and i consider myself emerging-pro. if i had followed the gearheads' advice on equipment these last few years, i would be thousands poorer and have way less equipment.bigtrick
- i would be thousands poorer and have a small quantity of nice equipment rather than a large quantity of working-class equipment.bigtrick

- I would assume you'd have to get into bed with some of those companies in order to afford some of their products.dropdown
- I guess I didn't really think about the price of that equipment as he was describing it. I was just happy to read about what it's for.dropdown
- ... to read about what it's used for.dropdown
- I' ve assisted some very high-end photographers, most user whatever they have to... and don't obsess at all....vaxorcist

not to diss you personally, dropdown - just the guy you linked to. sorry if i sound harsh. i'm just sick of the OMFG YOU NEED TO BUY EXPENSIVE SHIET IF U WANNA BE A REEL PHOTOGRAPHER LOL school of thought.
- lumedia0
Dean Grey is right. If you are making a living as a photographer you arent going to want crappy, unreliable equipment. Pocket wizards are the standard for a reason. They work perfectly everytime. 95% of photographers would say the same thing as this guy.
All you really need is the basic PW tranciever and they are only like 170.00 USD.

@dropdown:
try this book - it's got lighting diagrams with equipment noted in them. and the photographer/author takes good photos.

ok you know what... after reading his flash article, i take back my unilateral criticism of this guy's posts. i can't knock someone who endorses a used $150 handle-mount flashgun.

lol @ pocketwizards. They come with a plastic plate and they break all the time. Ugh. I really don't like using pocketwizards and they are totally overpriced in my book for "wireless". Granted they are the industry standard.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great if you don't move your camera and shoot in 12x12 box with no obstructions, May 24, 2008
By E
I bought these because I thought it was ridiculous to drop 400 bucks for two simple radio transceivers.I was excited about the little Elinchroms... but like a good boyscout I rented two pocketwizards 'just in case' on my way to the shoot.
I usually shoot in kitchens and the elinchrom couldn't hang. The powerpack was on the ground, and if there was anything obstructing a direct signal like a stack of plates, a table, etc. the flash wouldn't fire. If I held the camera for a vertical portrait shot I had to be careful: the flash wouldn't fire if the antenna was pointing away from the receiver. The little things feel dinky, and their tiny switchboard requires a watchmaker's hand to adjust.
The two rentals saved the shoot and after paying for the rental I dropped the 400 the next day for a pair of new pocketwizards. It hurt, but nothing hurts worse than lame equipment on an important shoot.

^ I guess the question is... why haven' manufacturers made a bluetooth alternative yet?
- dibec0
Totally. Elinchrom don't have the range Pocketwizards do. I personally have never had a "line of sight" issue. So, I am not sure what that is about. I really like the low profile from Elinchrom and $$$. I have both Pocktetwizards and Elinchrom, I really tend to pick up the Elinchroms and not the Pocketwizards.

I've noticed the retro/de-saturated style is IN for fashion, but can't find any decent fashion-photography retouching tutorials. Any advice?
Oh, and if you have any other fashion retouching tutorials or sites (not retro/vintage) that would be awesome too!! Thanks!

bump?

some hasty advice:
mess with curves adjustment layers in photoshop.
mess with solid-color layers on top of your image, set at low opacity and with various layer blending modes turned on.kind of vague... if i were on my home machine i could upload some examples, but i'm not, so sorry.
