ive had several recruiting agencies contact me for jobs. they seem to use it as a tool. i've also had employers in an interview say, "hey we looked at your linkedin profile, tell us about..."

a bunch of recruiters and if anything, something i look at to remember wtf i did 6 years ago.

I also neglected to keep my profile up to date from years back.

Recently though, a lot of people appear to be updating LinkedIn in some kind of faecebook backlash.

In the last few months I've had an interesting job offer (in the wrong place though, see neglected profile above) and a few good leads via the networks...

I heard of my colleagues being cold called for jobs they don't want by recruiters who have visited their linked in profile.

In linkedin in the "jobs" boards section, there was a design job post, and there was a linkedin message right below saying one of my contacts is connected with the "posted by" person. Turned out my friend did the retirements plan for that one company, and knew who the guy posting the job was. My friend talked to the guy and it was gonna set me up for an interview, but a week prior I got a different offer. But I thought that was pretty cool.

"Hi there. I'm phoning from Schoolleaver Recruiters. I have a role I thought you might be interested in. It's for an Aquatic Engineering Design role. It says on your LinkedIn profile that you are a designer. They'd really like you to come in for a chat. When are you free?"

"They're based on an oil rig in the Pacific, so any travel expenses would of course be covered"

It depends what you mean by success I suppose. I have re-connected with some people from my past and have discussed the possibility of working with them again, which they have been receptive to, but I have not pursued the leads to date.

So no 'jobs in the bag' as such, but its a really useful tool for locating people if you wanted to, as opposed to trying to do it through Facebook or Friends Reunited.

i've found it to be little more than a clusterfuck of desperate "business" people trying to "network" with people who have no interest in them. Yes, the recruiters are a pain in the arse on there too.

I'm not so sure it's really as useful or amazing as much of the press would have you believe.

It's an invaluable tool for us recruiters. I work in-house, so not the agency type, and find I need to use agencies less and less because of it. Agencies can no longer use the "We have a fabulously large database full of spot on candidates" when i can just log on to LinkedIn and find who I want.

I've also used it to find work for myself and the groups are a good way of finding answers to little problems that come up throughout the day.

    • u talk regulary on it ?WeLoveNoise

I got my latest full-time job from LinkedIn and have received a bunch of freelance work from there. I ask all my freelance clients and fulltime co-workers to write recommendations and it's been great for me.

I also contact recruiters and find out who offers a referral bonus and send them contacts of friends who are looking for work and I'm currently receiving bonus checks for 2 people who are freelancing.

Aside from the occasional useless recruitment agency nothing really — but I like how easy it is to just dump my CV there and point people in that direction.

    • yeah thats basically it for me. that and some sort of head trophy collection :Derikjonsson
    • I'm trying to persuade my company to accept LinkedIn profiles as opposed to full CVs. Some successBeeachboy
    • how does it differ from a "full cv?"erikjonsson
    • It's a lot easier to process as well as to submit to hiring manager. Easier to share and less admin involved.Beeachboy

Anyone in their right mind wouldn't assume that the work was gonna come flooding in simply by joining. - There is a subject similar to this on the qbn group on there.

Like Orbit says, it's been useful for re-connecting with old colleagues, friends from Uni.

I'd say your immediate circle of friends is a good place to start, so you may have more joy using facebook.

I have found the groups/discussions on LinkedIn quite helpful though.

I had a recruitment agency contact me about a Marketing Art Director position at Direct TV. I sat with her, passed. Sat with 6 people at Direct, passed. Went in for two days and received a phone call the evening of day 2 from headhunter: "Direct TV does not think you are a fit, you do not need to return onsite tomorrow." In two days onsite for a beginning process BROCHURE that was 6 panels, there were 3 different copywriters working on content with entire copy overhauls each time.

No one was giving me updates of changes.

Even the other designer that was creating "her version" of the brochure had also designed the approved cover. On day 2 over the course of 5 points of contact with her before the 3pm present, never once did she tell me of a cover change nor did the copywriters give me content changes via email or walking over to me and informing me of them.

I went into a 3pm sit down on day 2 with the ECD and CD with both of them looking at my content and saying "This is wrong" "There were changes"

I said out loud "I shouldn't have to chance down copywriters."

I was treated as a general run of the mill designer and not as an Art Director.

5 days later I get a call from one of my old Creative Directors. We worked at Christie's Art Auction last year. Now he is at the Lincoln Center_He needs me to come in. One of his full time designers left. Too much is on his plate. Its going beautifully thus far 3 weeks later.

In the end: Ask a lot of questions from recruiters and the people they place you with.

3 days after I was not onsite the headhunter tried to get me to sign a confidentially agreement with Direct TV. I told them the one that I signed with them was enough considering the hardship I was put though.
