Anyone in their right mind wouldn't assume that the work was gonna come flooding in simply by joining. - There is a subject similar to this on the qbn group on there.
Like Orbit says, it's been useful for re-connecting with old colleagues, friends from Uni.
I'd say your immediate circle of friends is a good place to start, so you may have more joy using facebook.
