One of the things that's always impressed me about other people's photos is great street photography of random people.
If this is something you do, how do you go about it? Do you ask people's permission to take a photo? Use a long enough zoom to not need to be right by them?

hip shot. 200-300mm zoom. click. check. erase. repeat.
or just ask them :)

Ask them and have a handy little release form handy in case you want to publish them.

With my D90 I just got last week, I do have a 50mm f1.8 Nikon lense, and a 17-50mm Tamron.
Currently shopping for a longer zoom lens. I was taking pictures at the zoo yesterday and missed having a longer zoom (My point and shoot Lumix has a 35-350mm range).

Annie Libewitz in her book said something a long the lines of practice photographing your friends and learn how to get intimate with them before you try strangers.

it's not very nice to just pop a picture of someone with out asking. ethnical.
but if you take a picture of a crowd of people, it's a difference thing.
- unethical?lvl_13

any examples of these "great street photos of random people"... ?
i'd bet half the time those shots aren't as random as they may appear.

- they just let them sleep it off. if you did that anywhere in the US you'd be in jail.mg33

Bruce Gilden gets soooo close, most of his subjects think he took a picture of something behind or just beyond them.
Don't act surreptitiously, if you get "caught"... just smile. Usually works.

also, set your camera to f/8 or something high so your dof is wide. Or, if its getting a little darker, just set the shutter to 1/125, but not much lower and snap away.
