It's great that InDesign has a setting for smart quotes but what if you need smart quotes AND inch marks? How can you get them both in one document?
Is there a keystroke for them? inches, feet?

Mac or PC?
Mac “ and ” = opt [ and opt shift [
Mac ‘ and ’ = opt ] and opt shift ]

Looking for the opposite of that—need inch mark and foot mark in InDesign on a MAC.

many fonts do not have the true 'prime' and 'double prime' characters you need.
try ctrl opt shift ' (twice for double primes) set them in italic to get a truer representation.

btw... google works really well for this kind of thing :)
- I disagree, if you type in "need inches" on google, you will get something differentMeeklo

It's a bit laborious but you can do it with the Glyphs menu.
Window > Type & Tables > Glyphs.
- only if the proper glyphs are actually included in the font.Amicus
- Hopefully it's not the QBN 2009 font then...MrT

I figured out how to do it.
Default prefs call for smart quotes which works great 95% of the time. So type along as usual, using your smart quotes. BUT THEN, when you need the true inch mark character, go to your prefs and uncheck the smart quotes box. I did this thinking all my smart quotes would turn to inches, but they didn't...
I then typed the same keystroke I had been using for my smart quotes and a dumb quote was displayed (inch mark).
Then, I just went back to my prefs and rechecked the smart quotes box and continued typing.
- a dumb quote isn't an inch mark. see V3s post belowAmicus
