    I figured out how to do it.

    Default prefs call for smart quotes which works great 95% of the time. So type along as usual, using your smart quotes. BUT THEN, when you need the true inch mark character, go to your prefs and uncheck the smart quotes box. I did this thinking all my smart quotes would turn to inches, but they didn't...

    I then typed the same keystroke I had been using for my smart quotes and a dumb quote was displayed (inch mark).

    Then, I just went back to my prefs and rechecked the smart quotes box and continued typing.
