This article is awesome in its ludicrousness:
http://blog.jameslist.com/2009/t…
"Like I said, the title that keeps getting bestowed upon them is not just “best German luxury watch maker,” but “best German luxury brand.” This means that people are not only valuing their watches, but the overall company and the values that they represent and preserve. Germans are fiercely protective of the “Teutonic way.” A term I just made up to define the value of careful, lengthy, and exhaustive engineering and testing. Meaning that A. Lange & Sohne has the opportunity to carefully consider each product they want to product, and then spend oodles of time and effort on it. Few companies can afford to do this. When something is released (at last), you know it is perfect, because you know A. Lange & Sohne makes sure it is perfect."
how many people in the luxury goods field actually buy into all this bullshit?

I'll give you an answer: Arthur Kade.

everyone SELLING luxury goods has to buy into it AND sell their customers on that notion. Chances are that the actual person buying luxury goods as an end consumer doesn't give a rats ass if it's actually a quality piece, just that people around them (or themselves) believes that it's worth their money. Shit, luxury is not indicative of quality (look at super expensive but shit quality "luxury" cars).

oh, they sure do. and I do not mean the ones *in* the industry, as they are mostly regular people who have to deal with statements like this on a daily basis and sometimes even "invent" them and make sure this shit sounds "great". those pips know exactly what it means.
the actual customers do buy the marketing shit. basically, if not this belief, that this timepiece (or this phone) is so cool and made of leather and re-assembled twice (hello, IWC) and blah blah — there is no reason to buy it. there is no story to tell your friends about your purchase. there is just no reason to justify why you have just spent twice as much for a watch then last week for a car.also, A. Lange & Söhne is in fact considered *inside* the luxury industry as the best watch out there. the presentations of some of the watch brands show them at the paramount of the luxury segment. and this gets even more funny to hear a judgement about a german watch from a swiss watch manufacturer.

btw, the best german luxury brand in the opinion of germans is..... Hugo Boss (1,5 million suits a year).

So...I take it by your reactions you'll switch back to pc, then?

at the core it *could* be true.
some manufacturers of watches are extremely precise and don't care much about time spent as much as it takes to create quality.
it is the essence of good craft..
