I've been watching a few music videos on youtube lately and can't help to wonder how these are made... I mean, if you don't have a crazy budget... I've seen a few independent ones that are sometimes better than pro videos on MTV. What should I do/know/buy/rent if I want to do my own? I'm thinking on doing one as a gift...
Have any of you ever worked/shot one? What type of equipment is 'required'? I read somewhere you also need permits if shooting n locations? I think pr2 has some experience on this, but any advice or ideas will be great!
Thanks!

Try something "different"...
Either program everything or make a stop motion animation :)

if you get stoped by the cops tell them that you are a student and are doing that for school...

Friend of mine shot this, I helped on set. We didn't use any permits for locations, just release forms for all the extras/actors.

I know about releases, but permits? What kind? Why? and how can you get one if you really want to do it?
- Sugary0
you need permission from the city if its shot on the street. They just want to know whats going on... and deny you permission if they wanted to. Might also cost a nominal fee... not entirely sure. If you get stopped by the cops they can rightfully confiscate your equipment without em.
As far as getting them, Its different for all cities. If you're in a small town just check with a gov't office that takes care of business permits. As for places like NYC and LA, i'm sure its a much different process.

Ha! all this research is getting me interested! I called the city and was told you need to fill out an application for permit, have insurance (if this is for the city, I am sure it will be 1Million or more) and depending on the production (4 or 40 crew for example) the city approves it.
Once it's all legal, what's next? What equipment do you need? What type of cameras are the best for videos? could it all be done with a 5d and good lenses?

buddy of mine shot this:
the budget for this: it pays to have friends who can shoot

in canada we have a music video production grant which is funded by muchmusic (music video tv network).
might be something similar in the US?

we used panasonic AG-dvx100b (i believe) and a ton of lights. You can rent cameras from local camera shops, probably around $200 a day depending on what camera you use, but anything that isn't HD is pretty much worthless these days. Also, an interesting side note is that panasonics video codec is compatible with apple/quicktime. Whereas Sony's video is not. So don't use a Sony if you use a Mac, and vice versa, unless you have access to one.

Yeah I recently went through the whole issue of Sony/mac. I would like to do it HD fo'sho! Can you use different lenses on that panasonic?

Not sure about that Sony thing. I know guys using the new HD cams and cutting with FCP.
There are a couple lenses for the Panasonic - wide angle and telephoto adapaters, and fish eye. Nothing with real advanced optics or dof.
I recently bought the Letus 35mm adapter for my DVX-100b, and a 50mm and 30mm lens. Takes practice, but does a real nice job of incorporating SLR lenses for better opticals and depth of field.
To buy it, you'll spend about 2500 for the adapter, support rods, and lenses.
You can also rent these packages. You can rent it from me to, hint hint. :)- It's the Sony EX-1 and EX-3 I am referring to, btw.harlequino

Dope indie producer (Stuey Kubrick) from Vancouver did this with Vancouver/Van Island rappers. Very sick production quality & style - literally the best i've seen from west canada so far. He charges a few G's i believe.
