I'm looking for (ideally) stackable shelving units that are nice, and would give enough height for magazines. I'm surprised there are so few out there that are nice, or at least from what I know.
any suggestions?

Actually I think I'm looking for something more like crates.

hm... I'm avoiding anything too designy. more simple and clean. things made from stainless steel would be perfect. I want an industrial kind of feel.

Have a look in your local directory for shop fitting companies - they often do cheapish demi-industrial metal shelving units, kinda like the ones in ^v3's pic, but even simpler.

Build your own with old magazines and large wooden boards. Gets pretty solid and looks great. Downside is that you'll have no magazines for the shelves.

I found a place in massachusetts that builds wooden crates. 13 ½ x 13 ½ x 11 ½ (about the size of a milk crate); built from ½” Baltic Birch plywood; unfinished; unassembled; packaged ready to ship:
Qty 1-10: $75.00 per pc.
Qty11-20:$55.00 per pc.

I just got some at ikea and they would definitely be stackable.
Check out the Expidat series, and this one specifically:

It comes with some kind of metal joining piece if stacking them. They're heavy too.
