Would be funny to have a global strike for 1 year. You can't say it wouldn't.

Corvo the world doesn't need designers. We're fucking worthless.

I thought degrees only mattered when applying for a job in education. I have never ever checked the degrees of an applicant. Whether or not someone qualifies depends entirely on their portfolio.
- Nostradamus0
You'll quickly find that, on average, non-grads simply don't have the critical thinking skills or the planning and organization of a college graduate.
- i don't agree. my experience has not been true to this. people are people.airey

I never got the piece of paper. Got a degree alright, but when I walked the stage they gave us completely worthless "ceremonial" scrolls with a lovely line drawing of the school's bell tower and shite else. They wanted $35 for the diploma. I thought the thousands of dollars worth of debt I had yet to pay off was quite enough of a bill, thank you very much.
- I'd have thought you'd have that framed on your ego wall.raskolnikov

I've sorted through stacks of applications before. Education is not high on the list of things I look at.
I won't even read the coverletter if the work isn't good. I scan for a link, check out the portfolio site/pdf, if everything looks okay and is presented well then I'll review resume for design of the document. I might glance at experience while I'm in there but usually go back to the cover letter and see how they introduce themselves and communicate in a business letter... If all those factors are good I'll go in for further review.
...a degree from such and such school would never be the deciding factor between candidates -- wouldn't even get you in the door.

I agree, but design is one of the few fields where that is true.
"I thought degrees only mattered when applying for a job in education."
haha I wish this was true but I don't think it is. What else are they going to go off of for someone who's applying for their first job? That BS is all they have.
- a school portfolio. you should have one upon graduation.Antonelli

I've never been asked for my qualifications in any of my jobs - only ever for my portfolio. My degree equivalent education wasn't in design either but advertising. But I was exposed to it for 6 months of my 2 year course. That's all my design education. My first job was working in a back street printer on boards setting up layouts with letraset and rubylith and drawing visuals in magic markers for clients. Much like this one done by my boss at the time (who now runs Wash design oop north).
The concept behind this job was my own and it was that ability to produce ideas with creative ideas behind them that eventually became my strength. I still have a lot to learn design wise but I'm getting there.- that centred ody-copy makes for some awkward reading. justification muthalicker!airey
- No you're right. But this was 1992 and this was all letraset. But I agree.JerseyRaindog

Resume, portfolio, salary requirements and BFA preferred.
Fucking right, if not, then you get all the fucking cowboys claiming they can do your job.

The Self-taught thing is kinda wack...there are a lot of really good self-taught people.
- yeh, self-taught + good = talent, college+good = education.mikotondria3

portfolio only and no bfa was the battle cry of the dot com era back in 96-2002. every tom, dick and harry was a designer because at some point in time they'd picked up a html book and taught themselves how to design for the web. companies started to soak these people up like a sponge only to find out they had no clue what the hell they were doing.
2003-2008 95% of the jobs i saw demanded a bfa. that way companies could know for sure if someone was taught design or not.
anyone can fake their way through a resume, portfolio and interview. how many fake portfolios have presented themselves this year alone in the qbn? a ton. think about it, those people were passing themselves off as designers using a bogus portfolio.
there are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part a company looks for a bfa only to cover their ass and help them better understand what they're getting in an employee. it doesn't mean they're any better of a designer than the guy who only has a portfolio, it's just a small piece of mind for them i guess.
- this is a good point. Though you can lie about a BFA just as easily as stealing a portfolio.monNom

--- update ---
had a interview last week. they said, we like your portfolio that's why we picked you. (good this far)
then they asked if i could make a ad or ads concepts for them, as a test. that's the only way we will know if your a good fit. (WTF!)
i said yes, at that point but after i thought about it. what a fucking prick(s). they are just taking advanced of the market to get free concepts for their paying clients.
of course i never made any for them as like most of them, they can't answer or reply on the email. sooooooo busy. fuck them.

lol @ "no self-taught". in my agency experience, the self taught guys worked circles around the "educated" guys about 85% of the time.
- section_0140
No amateurs is one thing, but no self-taught is ridiculous. Especially if the job is web design as the field is barely a decade old. I have a degree, but like most people, didn't hone my skills and develop as a designer until I was in the real world. You can only learn so much in school.
Also, I'm a completely self taught php programmer and can write strict oo mvc code with my eyes closed.

it's truly their loss. there are plenty of people that do not have BFA and are doing fine. It's a great filtering device to narrow a search down. as mentioned, this can also be reflection of the work atmosphere (fast paced, high stress, not-cool boss). or nothing at all.
Jesus loves you.
