Photographers what do you think? I've read so many reviews and they are all saying its a close call between Cannon EOS 5D and Nikon D700. I love the D700 but the lure of extra 9 or so mega pixels with EOS 5D is strong.
Would the extra 9 mega pixels make a big diff to captured detail if they are both full frame sensor cameras. There is a lot of talk that pixel count is more of a marketing tool with some cameras?
All opinions are very much appreciated, but please no Cannon VS Nikon fanboi crap.

do you already have canon or nikon lenses? that would be the decider for me
- i'm still saving for the d300, looks like i'll get its cousin instead.jaylarson

Do what I do, buy both, sell both and buy something completely different.

(wait for Nikon D700s which is coming out in few months)

the pixel density could be nice if you're using the best of the best lenses. yes canon has more lenses, but nikon's appear just a slight bit better.

Jay, is the video important to you?

hmmm yea i do have 3 good Nikkor lenses + a very good SB800 flash light, but that could all be sold on ebay. I have heard of D700X - that would be worth waiting for.

canon, love it!

the 5dmkii images i've seen have a plasticky look to them. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

The best way to see photo quality is (without the fanboi remarks)
Canon 5D Mark II

Is a damn hard decision. Also been looking at both to finally make the leap to digital. Am getting tired of scanning negs.
I like the feel of Nikon x 10000 -- though with the Canon you get more features for your $$.
The actual quality diff between the two really isn't going to anything significant. See meeklo's ^^^

in the end, no camera will make you a better or worse photographer.
Beware of people talking down one brand or the other, chances are that they are insecure about their skill and a brand is the only thing they have to hold on to.

you could always rent/borrow both and do a real world comparison yourself.
if you're not making large prints the extra megapixels might not really be a big deal for you.

agreed i like the feel of Nikon but am doing large prints, some are up to A1 so its either waiting for D700X or buying a 5D now. Both are bloody awesome and 5D is available now - but will D700X have more tricks up its sleeve being a newer camera...

honestly at the level of performance each can offer, the difference comes down to a few things:
1) price, if that matters to you. quality canon glass costs you, but not as much as similar quality nikon glass.
2) feel. when i was first shopping for cameras it was the 20d vs the d70 maybe? regardless canon felt better in my hand ,the thumb wheel and finger wheel made more sense than two wheels controlled up by the shutter release. i just liked the way the canon felt, so i've been with canon since.
3) don't trust blogs, a lot are fanboys. nobody is going to ask you what brand of camera you got a good shot with, they're going to ask you how you got such a rad shot.
4) lighting. dunno what type of shooting you'll be doing, but canon's IR system differs vastly from nikon's SB flashes. SBs can be used on canons, however, with a bit of trickery.

I have a 5D MKII and I love it! I shot my sisters wedding on the weekend and used the video feature also! all in one camera. I'm happy :)

i do mainly product with studio lights for work & landscape for fun, I'm a designer that works for a company too cheap to hire a photographer but in saying that i did 4 years of Design school with a minor in photography so i do have a decent idea of how its done. I think both cameras aren't that good with studio lights and white balance.
- "both cameras are that good with studio lights" is what i read in reviews, i haven't tested thisSinov

I started with an EOS rebel then started doing video and bought an HV30. Got into 35mm adapters and of course got the 5DM2. I use Nikon and Canon lenses and very happy with the results. I think I read somewhere that Nikon for Action shots and Canon for stills. I really don't care who likes what or who says which is better.
Do your research and buy which fits your budget and you are more comfortable with.
