Not long I mean I rarely shoot so I say 4 years as duration but for actually actively shooting, half a year.

Shoot film. Just try it, remove the instant gratification and just take your time for each shot.

you just need to shoot more, and more after that....events, parties, models, whatever you like.

Sound advice in this thread, especially "shoot more",
but if everything else fails:
find a photographer you like, and copy his style until you got it right enough to branch out with your own style from that.Or alternativly: be an assistant for a while.
