Any one know of any good sites that I can get free, or cheep, royalty free music?
I just need a few loops to use on a flash ad / movie that I'm sorting.
Thanks.

Try www.cinephonix.com . email the guys for a specific rate for what you need. you can also email them your ad/movie with a few suggestions of the genre and they'll send you back a few suggestions of music synched to the movie.

I've been to most of these sites and can't find anything good. Most of the songs sound like cheap Cinemax porn or from a Microsoft Seminar presentation.
If I am doing a short video for a dance team, could I use their routine music? Could I use real songs from like say, Goldfrapp? I am not getting paid, it won't be for sale, etc. Just a short demo I want to help them with so they could use as promotion.
What are the rules about this if it is not commercial work?

if it's promo-use it, drop a credit, and send it to the artist - as long as you don't profit from it without consent from the artist...you should ge good

Yes! If I use it, I would definitely credit the artist on the video's credits just to be safe and because it is the right thing to do. I've seen numerous agency and portfolio demo reels with songs from artists, so I thought it would be a bit similar but want to make sure.

Unfortunately, you need to license commercial music because technically they need to be paid a royalty every time their track gets played, regardless if it's at a hockey game or on the radio. Most publishers would offer a synchronization license which could range anywhere from $0 to thousands of dollars. Yes, even for a non-profit thing...
That being said, if you want to take the legal route, step one by far is getting consent from the musician or whoever holds the copyright to that music. Sure, you could likely get away with using it, but it's as legal as using a professional photograph on your personal website.
Technically, you're not charging for your work, the video wont be sold but you said "promotion" yourself - you're using someones work to promote something without compensating that person for their work. That wouldn't stand up in court.

Figured i should try helping as well. Look for Creative Commons stuff. There are lots of creative commons licenses that allow free use for commercial and non-commercial work. It's a bit of a struggle to find good shit, but it's out there if you're patient. If you're not patient, well, that's when money comes into play. ;)

I also run a label where a lot of our material is released under a creative commons license. If you took 15 minutes and scoured some of the releases you might find something you dig, in which case, I'm more than willing to work it all out with you. (probably requiring little more than a quick couple of emails as record of your usage and intentions..)

Sweet! Thanks a lot neferiu! Let me check...

Awesome stuff neferiu! I am looking for a house-ish with some bass workout type of track. It is a dance team and I want something that'll get the audience pumping if you know what I mean... Thanks a lot!
Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I've used cinecue for a lot of projects. As long as it isn't broadcast, it's $150 per track. And that's probably even negotiable.

Only bummer is their library isn't available online for preview, you have to have it mailed to you snail mail. Worth it though.
