Is it rare to be asked to design something for an interview?
I find it to question the credibility of your portfolio, not to mention to the additional FREE work your providing your prospective employer.

I ask people during the interview to do a design problem with me... I'm not a fan of take home things, but in person I see a lot of (well, in the interaction design world)

Avoid.

I'd say it's a mark of lower confidence in the company's interviewing skills. They really should be able to ask the right questions to determine whether or not someone is qualified. Also shows a lack of concern/respect for your personal time.
But, hey, they're driving, so what can you do?

If it was a place I wanted to work would be pretty interested in the opportunity.
Though I also think take home would be the only way. Trying to show your skills during an interview could be a nightmare for some talented people. People work and think different ways some well on there feet some need a comfortable environment (outside an interview).

It sucks but I can sympathise with the company to a certain degree. I once took someone on with an amazing portfolio but they were incapable of producing anything other than endless clones of the things in the portfolio. I think you just need to agree with them upfront that they are testing your essential competencies not pressuring you to be the next big thing in design for the purposes of a purposeless job interview test.

all good points. i agree that it could be a lack of a companies interviewing "skills." but i can also see how some people could have faux or portfolios that don't merit their actual real world work.
i've personally never encountered this, but a friend of mine came across this today and it really threw me at first. also considering the employer isn't really the opportunity of a life time.
but like blaw said, they are driving.

Ha, I am working on a take home project tonight for an interview.
Anyone want to do it for me ;)

may be valid if you have 0-2 years work experience.

The one place where I worked that did it correctly had me design and develop some flash crap. They paid for my time and I got hired.

I had one place where I went in for an interview and they had me start working...and I got paid. They said I could come back for a few days to decide if I really wanted the job, and also so they could be sure my skill set was right for the position.
It was cool because I got to work there for a day and know that I didn't want to come back :)

So in other words, don't design anything unless your getting paid or you really want the job.

All these interview tests are stupid and insulting to anyone with experience and recommendations.
