It sucks but I can sympathise with the company to a certain degree. I once took someone on with an amazing portfolio but they were incapable of producing anything other than endless clones of the things in the portfolio. I think you just need to agree with them upfront that they are testing your essential competencies not pressuring you to be the next big thing in design for the purposes of a purposeless job interview test.
