i agree, hence why i said it was a monolith over a monopoly, and why i have CS3MC, if you can't beat them join them
sidenote, corel in it's earlier years had an annual million dollar design contest that always produced some fantastic results

I guess Corel is used more in the technical illustration field? I have no idea what the market shares are

Very knowledgeable group - my post was 95% rhetorical - So now I bend over and try to figure what upgrade I'm eligible for -

Well, adobe is not a monopoly.
- Actionscript is now officially Open Source, you could download the flex free SDK (which includes a swf compiler) and not use flash at all. there are some flash-like OS IDE around.
- You could use corel Stuff
- You could use PaintShop pro
- You could use inkscape nad Gimp
- You could use Microsoft expression stuff + SilverlightSo, no, adobe is not a monopoly.

corel is just like illustrator, same tools, same shapes, same silly plugins, same ability to make something toatally lame just the interface (for me at least) oh and we have pages, ;)

save to ai is not a problem among many other formats

I guess the way I see it the dominance of Adobe (whether you want to call it monopoly or not is up to you) is self-perpetuating.
Yes, you can save to EPS or AI but most people are going to want to use Adobe software to ensure there are no compatibility issues. The advantages to actually using one of those other programs is virtually nil.
- like i said earlier, i have both for this reason, mesh gradients don't play well either wayversion3

corel 14 was rushed to the market, and is full of annoying bugs, like crashing when i try change the position of something by writing the new coordinates into the textbox, etc...
i've been using corel since 8.0, and i'm more and more disappointed from version to version. like when they released x3, it had around 2 new features, both of them really useless, like color adjust wizard, or i don't know how it's called.
i think adobe products are more reliable, and they support their products much better, but corel graphics suit is still not a bad alternative.

oh, and talking about GIMP. it has the worst GUI ever created imho.

I have been a loyal customer of adobe for years and when I needed them to cut me an ever so little break they bent me over a fucked me with a bread knife. I hate the cunts now.
- what were you needing?brandelec
- platform swap for my other PC computer. They wanted the original serial that was on the box, from 12 years ago.Jnr_Madison

You can always upgrade to Paint Shop Pro

Things I don't like about Adobe
-Takes too long to load/ overuses memory based on what it is trying to do. On my older machine I often can't get CS4 to shut down without crashing when a number of docs are open.
-Lack of useful updates/ new features when a new version comes out
-Their GUI is only meh. It could be much nicer considering they are the "graphics" people.- As others have said, they are far and away the best option thoughukit
