  Well, adobe is not a monopoly.
  - Actionscript is now officially Open Source, you could download the flex free SDK (which includes a swf compiler) and not use flash at all. there are some flash-like OS IDE around.
  - You could use corel Stuff
  - You could use PaintShop pro
  - You could use inkscape nad Gimp
  - You could use Microsoft expression stuff + Silverlight

  So, no, adobe is not a monopoly.
