"Sarkosy announced on Monday the establishment of a commission to consider banning the wearing in public of the burka - the garment worn by some Muslim women which covers the entire body, including the face"
- PonyBoy0
banning it is as silly as enforcing women to wear it...
... should be a choice to the woman - regardless of where she lives.
- BusterBoy0
There'd be a fair chunk of Muslim women who have no choice but to wear it non?

- I'm all for itGeorgesII

Has anyone here ever seen anything based on actual account and data which proves either way whether women are being forced to wear this or choose to wear it? Can anyone say for sure that they aren't simply reacting to something 'different' which they don't understand culturally? after all, wearing a black head scarf isn't actually hurting anyone, apart from maybe making them a bit hot. Could it be that folk in the west are just transferring some distrust and fear of Muslims into a 'concern' for the rights of muslim women? just sayin'

Some (be it very few) women choose to wear a burka. Most however, have it forced on them by husband/relatives etc.
Banning it is good, however, Sarkozy should ask himself" "am i discriminating?"
if so, ban all religious clothing or ban nothing.

in some countries, they are forced but only a few,
if you go to maroc you'll see that all the girls want to look as occidental as they can,
if you go to belgium you'll see lots of maroccan girls wearing a scarf, its strange to see how extremist they become once they move up north,

"Some (be it very few) women choose to wear a burka."
show me the proof of this which will allow me to believe it isn't just an assumption on your part

The article alludes to the motive being one of liberating women from a sexist and oppressive cultural dogma that actually has no roots in Islam at all. The wearing of the burka is, apparently, not mentioned in the Koran and is merely a cultural item from Pakistan.
I think the problem is that banning the burka does not change the mindset that enforces the burka, and if the ban is effective it will simply mean muslim women will be kept indoors permanently.
Its not liberating anyone. Tackling the reasons for imposing the burka could be considered a step towards secular liberation, but the burka itself is not the problem.

I think it's wrong to dictate to people how to dress. Sarkosy is just trying to drive the immigrants away.

this is so sad ; they rather provoc and start a new controversy to make people forget about the fact they completly inefficient to help our econmy raise from the ground.
idiots.
No one give a fuck about burka these days, people just want a job...

French politics always radicalizes and moves to the right in a recession - Sarkosy is merely appealing to this shift in order to gain popular appeal, its pretty cynical and frankly racist.
- There are lots of races that wear burqas, its hardly rascist. Bigoted, yes.thebottlerocket
