thx e-pill. true, i guess hipsters aren't all bad...
There is no way im moving to new jersey.. what about dumbo or brooklyn heights?
- akrokdesign0
upper east side or chelsea. ;-)
- randommail0
Except for akrokdesign, everyone here is assuming you want to live in hipster squalor.
hahaha.

crap.. i think i used the word 'hip' in my original post. this may be causing some of the confusion..
I think I want to live in brooklyn because housing seems to be a better value. I originally thought williamsburg would be a good place, but it looks like its as pricey as everywhere else (even a little more expensive).
so price aside- wheres the 'up and coming' areas in brooklyn? one more thing to consider is that i will have to commute to soho..
anyone?

thx. looks like bushwick is out.
- bump790
Bushwick is great if you want your house broken into, and want to live in fear of your life every minute, brooklyn heights is the nicest part of BK, dumbo is cool but hasn't come into itself yet. I say live in the city if you can for your first place in NY, everything will be more convenient, although Brooklyn has pretty amazing sights, food and women.

Williamsburg and Greenpoint are one in the same both good (age 35 and down). Bushwick has bugs. Dumbo is cool to visit but sucks to live there. Fort green is rad (age 35 and up). All of NY is full of "hipsters" so I would not base where you live on that.

I lived in Brooklyn when I first moved to New York and it sucked on so many levels. In my opinion, it is a thousand times better living in Manhattan no matter what the sacrifices may be in apartment space, etc.
- orangecrunch0
Live in Manhattan for at least a year. Then move to Brooklyn. I know a lot of people that started out in Brooklyn limited themselves to the hipster realm and dont know anything about the city as a result. I live in BK now and its incredible for me - but I also lived in Manhattan for 5 years. I think everyone should experience Manhattan and develop a bitter hatred of everything that is wrong with the world.

I did this move about 9 months ago. The rents in Manhattan are dropping and are not that far off from SF at the moment; if you look carefully you can avoid deposits and/or last month's rent. I also recommend moving to Manhattan and experiencing what NYC is all about.
- this is true and its like the first time ever in nyc history rent wise..
manhattan is now cheapest...e-pill

Its very important to get a place near a subway. Where ever you go make sure its an easy walk to the station and you can get to midtown in short time. No one drives, subway is key. I live in Long Island City, awesome place.
