Bushwick is great if you want your house broken into, and want to live in fear of your life every minute, brooklyn heights is the nicest part of BK, dumbo is cool but hasn't come into itself yet. I say live in the city if you can for your first place in NY, everything will be more convenient, although Brooklyn has pretty amazing sights, food and women.
