So he tried to play it off like a cool guy and expected you to pick up the pieces of his broken shit? Fuck that. you're a pro. The lawyer analogy is a valid point, but being friends has clouded that for the guy. He sounds like a douche.
Personally, I think you might have taken it a bit too far, but you've had this coming with resentment building for a while if you've been giving him unwarranted discounts.
- fuckclients0
yah, i hadnt really thought about the discount too much, ive become accustomed to it.
i think i took it a bit too far too, but it burns me that he just doesnt give a fuck about our relationship anymore, professional or otherwise. i found out who he is working with now, and i actually sort of know the guy. im pretty sure the guys rates are even cheaper than my 50% discount i give him.
given that im so pissed off, and i dont care about anonymity anymore, here's the new guy hes working with....
guy clearly knows what hes doing on the web. look at all that compliant code, and that sweet SEO consideration.

bah, I know you're bitter but you really can't fault the new guy. He's probably just lookin' for work like the rest of us.
- fuckclients0
im not trying to call the new guy out, but that's guys site does not really say 'professional grahic and/or web designerr' to me. looks amateur to me. especially considering the type of work ive been doing for my friend in the pasts
- You got anything online to show us? and, no I don't have myself, so I need to get off my arse!Amicus
- i dont feel comfortable showing anything i do have up. double standard, yes, but god the old port is BADDDDfuckclients

Here's a metaphor.
There's this busboy, we'll call him Juan. He works at a restuarant. One day the boss hires a new waitress, Maria. Maria is one serious looker, and Juan has the hots for her. Their boss tells them that they both have to stay late to clean up. As they close up that first night, Maria says "Wow, what a long day..." Juan says, "You do look tired, you go home, I'll clean up." Maria leaves and Juan thinks he has scored some major points with the new hot waitress. This goes on for the next two days. On the third night, Friday, some young gigolo comes by at closing, aparently tking Maria out on a date. Juan says "Hey, you're supposed to work late with me and help clean up!" Maria walks out the door with the gigolo winking at Juan saying "Why? I haven't had to before..."
Remember the expectations you set at the beginning of any relationship, will be the ones that will be judged against the whole way through.
- Metaphor of the year, anyone?********
- Yeah, I think you gave this guy a huge sense of entitlement.Gucci
- or was that more of a parable?TheBlueOne
- Hey, continue the story! What happends with Maria and the Gigolo? Do they....do they do it?Peter

- That's fucking scary, I used to be a busboy back in the day, and my name is Juan, never cleaned for a waitress thoughAmbushstudio

And the moral of the story is,
Friends + work + money - "friend discount" * 7 years + lack of communication/ understanding = Unhappy ending/ post on QBN.

moral of a story: dont be such a fucking sucker

While I disagree that you set yourself up for this (sounds like you had a good friend who basicall dicked you over for the sake of a dollar, and had been waiting for a reason to cut you out of the picture), I do agree that you should have expected something like this given how much you've allowed this guy to walk all over you for so long.
Eight years is a long ass time though. Maybe he will go to the new guy, get shitty work, and come crawling back to you?

Friend or no friend, protect yourself from these kind of predatory arrangements. Yes, you need work, but sometimes its less work and more of a buttfucking.

I just realized you said "development time."
Whatever it is, take it down.
- Cptn_Uncanny0
Damn. I've made the same mistake before too. After reading this I am convinced that friend or not you treat your business like a hitman...
- zarkonite0
I'd say try everything you can to get your money the right way... but in the end he decided to stop playing by the rules first, so do your worste.
- SlashPeckham0
Return the cheque and take back your code - sweat his balls and he'll be back in a week kissing your ass - he has no game without you...
- kgvs720
They say business is not personal. It is.Hopefully you make up/out your differences. If not, charge everyone equally no matter what.
- must_dash0
I wouldn't even cash that cheque... dirty money... or it you do send it back a dollar at a time that he has to sign for, until you run out of $100

lessons to learn:
• never do work for friends or family
• never discount your rates, it only serves to de-value your work (if it's for friends etc then see above)
• always draw up a proper legal contract for any work no matter how small, this will ensure you get payment.
• put any communications in writing.Just because we're designers doesn't mean we can be any less thorough and methodical than a pedantic lawyer would be. Always look after yourself, everyone will be doing so.
