If you're discussing savings in a savings account, a good rule of thum is to try to put away one of every three dollars you take in (will help rainy days, contingencies, and eventually retirement).
- version30
my savings plan, if i get 1900, 1000 into savings, 900 checking. if i get 4500, 500 checking, 4000 savings. if i get 3000, 1000 checking, 2000 savings. act like your checking is all you have

$.76 and I just wrote a check for $.69 for some milk for my white russians. We're talking about unchecked aggression here, dude.

I can actually save money, just as long my car doesn't give me problems. Which seldom happens. My car was designed to give me troubles. Unfortunately, I need it to get to work, since there is no compatible public transport anyway near my schedule. Distance is also too mountainous to go on a bike. This is one of the biggest cons of living in this particular side of the country.
Makes me miss Lisbon all the time.

I put my savings in an ING account- which used to have a decent interest rate- something like 5%. Now its down to 1.5% :-(
Anybody getting a higher interest rate somewhere else?

Since were talking about savings and money I recently started using Mint.com to manage my money. You can track all your accounts including your 401k and stock trades. It seriously has been beneficial to me and I suggest that some of you look into it.

Quicken also has a cool online money manager.

braad: dutch bank nibc has the best conditions i know of right now.
day-to-day rate is 3.8, fixed term 1 year is 4.25. no fees, full state protection, but the account runs in euros. looks good in terms of currency now, but it´s not impossible for the euro to fall against the greenback at some time...

Saving your money is wise. But thinking that saving is the same as investing is foolish.
If you're young, now is the time to invest in yourself and real estate. Spend money on your education, fashion, and health. It'll help you get a better job, promotion, etc. Which all leads to more income.
