TM is fantastic. I have been doing it for years and find it great at relieving stress and staying healthy. And lots on research on the technique. Check out the web site www.tm.org

TM is to buddhism what MTV is to music.

I'm finding more and more that prayer can be a wonderful form of meditation. Rather than being constantly bothered with my laundry list of complaints, perceived needs and desires, I think God mainly just wants me to enjoy him.
In prayer, this means quiet, still reflection on who he is, and simple enjoyment of his presence, rather than rattling off a thank-you list or a bunch of requests, as if he were some sort of cosmic DJ. Besides, according to the writings of Paul, the Holy Spirit constantly intercedes on our behalf "...with groanings too deep for words."
I usually can't feel his presence because my mind is so filled with noise and occupied with my own selfish pursuits. When I turn off the noise and slow down, only then can I be at peace.

I still think you don't have to pay (that much) for meditation
- sea_sea0
^ you shouldn't have to pay at all for meditation! i understand tithing and giving donations for what you receive, but a 2k price tag?? no thank you.

I've being doing research in that field for myself for a couple of time and I was not able to cope the fact you had to pay so much for TM. My conclusion came that is simply a gimmick for what should be free, I dont know why somebody had the stupidity of trademarking meditation...
TM meditation is simply meditation by repeating a mentra as the object of focus, as you can also meditate by focusing on the respiration or also simply concentrate on a candle flame. The goal of all meditation is to focus in one way and calm the monkey mind.
When you achieve it, it act like a mental flush or a clean reboot of the mind, all the background processing shut down (If i use a computer metaphore)
For the mentra meditation, the trick is you can choose whatever mentra you want as long as the word don't represent something you know and create a image and then start the flow again.
Here what I found if you want to understand the technique (that's extremely simple) and follow a tutorial. They charge a couple buck (I think is 25$) and they let you download a tutorial with a mp3 to understand the speed of the pronunciation of the mentra.

I had a Transcendental meditation manual when I was about 10, fuck knows why but I did and I practised the meditations rigourously every single night for a very long time and never got anywhere with it so I can speak with absolute inarguable authority when I tell you that this shit doesn't fucking exist.

It doesn't cost any money, just get some headphones, put on some music, relax. I mean.... relax. That youtube video on the previous page sums it up - for me anyway.
May not work for everyone but the key is not to think about it, wanting it to happen. You cant think yourself into meditation, and you dont even need it every night.
I just use it when I can't sleep, need to relax or I feel stressed.

I saw Lynch give a talk on it and damn is that guy serious about it.
He claims all his films are influenced by TM, maybe not a surprise;)
I think he even said he was starting a scholarship fund for people who want to study it.

One of the reasons people have such good success with TM is because of the thoughtful and exacting way in which it is taught. The instruction is given by a highly trained, qualified teacher, plus free refresher courses and one-one-one guidance are available for life at no extra charge – anywhere around the world. The TM technique, and the teaching methods that are used, were carefully developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in order to bring the benefits of an ancient tradition to all the people of the world. These instructional methods help ensure that each person learns to meditate correctly and reap the benefits of DAILY PRACTICE. The whole system was set up to maximize the ease and appeal of consistent daily practice, which is how you will experience increasing benefits over time. For more information go to: www.tm.org

In 1971 and I was an under achieving senior in a middle American High School when I saw a funny looking poster with a picture of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on it and a lecture on Transcendental Meditation was announced for the next day in the school auditorium.
The speaker was a young man in a suit who spoke serenely of the silence deep within us and of the simple mental technique by which we could experience it and enjoy its benefits in our day to day life.
I attended the seven step course and boy was it great. I experienced a deep, sweet indescribable silence right on the day I learned. Right away my life began to change. Not because of any information I was given but because of the beautiful experience of deep inner silence that I now experienced twice a day as I practiced my Transcendental Meditation in the privacy of my bedroom.
Suddenly my life became hopeful again and I was full of enthusiasm for it. Immediately my grades improved and I was accepted to college. After a few months I spontaneously quit smoking and became a vegetarian. I entered college, made the Deans List and met a beautiful young girl whose passions were oil painting and Italian food. She also learned TM and we meditated together every chance we got.

a friend of mine is very much into meditation. On occasion she will literally meditate all night instead of sleeping. You would never guess this if you met her face to face. She's quite normal, good looking, happily married and a mother of 2.
that shit ain't for me though.

I prefer Silva Method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sil…
It has a more practical approach, gives you certain techniques you can use to work with your mind.
