So it was brought to my attention that some dude registered a URL similar to mine but instead used a different extension ".biz" - I know I can't buy up all types of URL extensions, so i'm just bitter that this happened
It's like people riding your coat-tails .....Mine: http://www.mstrpln.com
Them: http://www.mstrpln.bizThe fact that this guy is running a similar business to mine AND is from the same city that I am based in is even more lamer.

both in montreal, too. Interesting...
- about 10 minutes away from me right now.MSTRPLN
- yeah, i mean if it was in miami, it wouldnt be a big deal really. But due to the proximity, you might have a case for the C&D mentioned above.baseline_shift

Reminds me of the today show taking me TodayNow and making it today now!
Fucking losers stop watching their program now... it's bullshit for the brain anyway!

Deal with it. It sucks dude, but that is part of the internet world. The name "dibec" is now a damn dj name, some japanese school, a freaking electronics store, some Scandinavian research company.
Yeah ... so just wait. It will get worse. =P

u not think this is more of a molicious thing
ie: this guy prob doesnt exist but if someone shud click on his link and his details are very similar to urs - this could make u look back.kinda passing u off in a subtle way
- I assume he is using my rep in this city to gain clientsMSTRPLN
- more the other way i think. destroying ur rep as a designer in the off chance that a potential client sees that site insteadWeLoveNoise

Thats sucks but it happens. Sucks even more that its the same type of business though...
- blaw0
Complete bullshit. You're right to be pissed. Got an attorney? Surely there are some limitations on one party's ability to approximate an existing business.

I've just had a client spend a small fortune on registering and hosting 41 different iterations of their domain and company names, his argument is that you have to 'capture' the IP in its entirety. To be fair, the dude's worth $330m, so $20-40 per domain doesn't even make him blink.
- Same guy as the 'rich client' thread... http://www.qbn.com/t…

A client I have has sent a complaint to ICANN before about something similar. Worth a shot anyway...

You'd might as well buy .ca before some other jerk-off gets it.

if you own a trade mark you can cease & desist, otherwise...
- in Australia you can cease and desist without trademark if it is proven that its "affecting your business."_me_

you guys are dumb.
.com and .biz are NOT the same url.
There is nothing you can do about that. How can he be running the same name as you? If your actual company name is registered in Canada you have ownership over it.
But that ownership doesn't extend to URL's.

Get over yourself.

mstrpln - have u actually trademarked ur name ?
may be something in that- It doesn't have to be a registered trademark to have rights in the trademark.ribit
- he may have the rights to trade under that name tho meaning no other multimedia company can do so.WeLoveNoise
- that's trademarkribit
- ribit0
Trademark and trade dress seem much more important here than the domain name.
