what's the point in something close to helvetica, helvetica already does a good job at doing helvetica. Try and find something different.

I'd like to give this one a try:
http://www.ascenderfonts.com/fon…Ascender Sans™ Family was designed by Steve Matteson as an innovative, refreshing sans serif design that is metrically compatible with Arial™. Ascender Sans Family offers improved on-screen readability characteristics and the pan-European WGL character set and solves the needs of developers looking for width-compatible fonts to address document portability across platforms. Character Set: Latin-1, WGL Pan-European (Eastern Europe, Cyrillic, Greek and Turkish).

Univers and Avenir have a bunch of weight and variety. It's not Helvetica, but what is?
If its small pt, gillsans? I dunno.

Nimbus Sans too:
Nimbus Sans is a sans-serif typeface created by URW++, and released under the GPL. It features Normal, Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic weights, and is one of several freely licensed fonts offered by URW++. Although the characters are not exactly the same, Nimbus Sans is based on Helvetica and has very similar letterforms, and has metrics that are similar to Arial. It is therefore very similar in structure to Univers. It is one of the Ghostscript fonts, and is a standard typeface in OpenOffice.org.

And, of course, Dada Grotesk and Executive by Optimo.

Univers. But I often fall back on Akzidenz-Grotesk, just a personal pref I guess. Tho the House Ind. Chalet is pretty nice.
- Cept Chalet doesn't have as many weights and sizes that compare. But the vintage Chalet stuff is cool too. NYC, London, Paris, Stockholm etc.threadpost

I can't stand Univers. To my eyes it is just far too neutral.
What about something like Fedra?
