Looking to have a play around with my first digital SLR and wanted some suggestions.
It's my first bash really so wanting to spend less than £200 on a 2nd hand one to start of with - what do you think?

Best dSLR to start with:
Canon Rebel.
Cheap and it has more functions that you will ever learn how to use.
- I still use mine and I had it for like 2 years almost.Meeklo

£200 is a bit cheap.

this one is pretty cheap, it was the first model (300d) its discontinued now, and most point and shoots these days have better resoulution, but with your extremely low budget I seriously doubt you can get something else

they're rare now (released in 2006/7) but if you can find one in good condition definitely a Nikon D50 great bit of kit to start on.

Looking at Cannon's EOS 350d at the moment.
Only looking for something to get me going - happy to upgrade again in a year or so if I get into it.
- nothing wrong w that, specially if you just shooting for funMeeklo

just brought a Pentax K100D a couple of hours ago for £210 off ebay.
got good reviews as well

although 350d might be too much for your budget, but you never know.. I don't mean to throw you down, but that one is 8mp and is still pretty current, the reason the 300d is so cheap is because its 300mp
you won't be able to fill a poster w one image, but you will still have a great time learning

I got a Canon Rebel XTi for $400 or less refurbished from Future Shop. Try something like that. Still works perfectly well, and it's been about a year now.
- Meeklo0
yeah refurbished is better than new, if you can find one for that price

ebay is great for cheap old DSLRs. I think my Canon 20D is now $400 US, so I think thats near your budget of £200 with the conversion.
If you want one that will last you a long time go with a used 20D and if you get a lighting system in the future you wont have to buy a new camera. Rebels dont have the sync cord option for a lighting system.

just swab cleaned my sensor for the first time (40D). damn those things are SOOOO fragile. being an old SLR fan was a reality check as to how careful you gotta be with DSLR. to be honest can't really imagine buying a used body off the net. must be a lot of abused sensors out there.
for that reason i'd suggest a cheap Canon Rebel, new or refurb with warranty.
or bank interest% is so cheap these days, buy something just a little more money that you can grow into. £400-£500 would put you in a much better position.

You could also go even cheaper and go for the canon 10D. It's got the magnesium body and is bigger than the rebel.
I have the 20D and love it. It's a great camera

I was lucky enough to get a guy telling the truth about the 20d he sold to me, it was a year old any only had a couple hundred photos taken which is practically nothing.

My old 300D (original rebel) has about 35000 shots on the clock and still going strong. I have upgraded twice since then but keep using it as my danger cam. Great cameras.

300d has the best pixel per chipsize relation.. a lot of photographers keep it for that reason.
- MSL0
I'd second a Nikon D50 if you can find one.
- raf0
Pixel per chipsize relation tomkat? What does it mean, nice big grains of noise? :)
I remember 300D was slow and had some WB issues, even compared to 10D but that's my short experience.I recommend 350D (Rebel XT in the US) over 300D, you can find it cheap if you look. Or 20D if you could find one for around £200.
I wouldn't buy 10D, it doesn't take EF-S lenses (300D and higher do).

Thanks or all the responses everyone - really helpful stuff.
