hey i live in los angeles. where people used to come to be actors now they come here to be artist, designer, art directors, creatives. its awesome. if you like working in the advertising world, word of advice, the first 15 years will be your sucking dick, the last will be you getting serviced by people for the last 15 yrs of your career. but i concur with what kelpie said too. you can get laid for being a designer. its great nothing feels better than dripping sweat, oh wait yes there is, dripping money.
- fuck me, you sound like a tosser matekelpie
- yeah well... at least i can form a sentence whilst bangin hot chicks and making loads of money.********

seriously; try hard to see jobs from different perspectives than your own, get in the heads of the consumers and the client, try to understand both what they want and what they actually need, and remember that your own desires to do particular thing for the sake of your ego goes on the bottom of that stack of priorities

Dear Young Designer,
At some point you'll realized you squandered your life away trying to get people to buy stupid shit. Then you'll hate your life as much as I hate mine. You may sell everything you own, buy a sail boat, try sailing around the world, but this will probably prove as unfullfilling as your design career.

#1 Go big. Don't just draw in small sketchbooks... Splash some paint on a canvas... Paint some hand lettering on a window and then break the mofo.. build a graphic out of snow and sticks and piss. Creativity is everything and
#2 Stay humble.
#3 Don't give up your personal projects.
#4 Enjoy life, don't work so much.

Dear Young Designer:
I hate your over achieving ass! No I did not read one of your many blogs, No I will not go clubbing or to see your new band. I will not see your art showing at a coffee shop. Leave me alone I'm going to go home to my wife and mortgage and drink light beer on my couch until I pass out everynight just hoping I'm not the next one to get laid off so they can pay you less to do more.

bang as many female coworkers as you can while you have the title "intern" or "jr. designer". Your married with children Creative Director will take you out for drinks you can laud him with tales of your mischief, in doing so, he will be living vicariously through you and this will lead to raises.

* Never fight for a concept or idea on the spot. If you really love an idea and can't let it go, develop it in tangent with other ideas, and qualify the outcome based on all of your explorations. It's much more rewarding when your peers notice you are a designer who works hard for their ideas. As opposed to being the guy who gives up when their idea get canned.
* First instinct is actually the worst instinct. You're constantly influenced by the things around you, and those factors mold your worldview. You have the power to influence these means of communication. The things that you create have a responsibility to inform society in some way. They should be clear, and convey an informed understanding of your subject.
* Last, an account manager / client relations manager probably can't do your job, but you could easily and quickly learn to do theirs. You can think it, but never speak those words aloud, for you will surely be hung. True story. You might also happen to hate your AM/CRM, but remember! -- they will almost always be in the way of getting your ideas understood by the client. If you have a bad relationship with your CRM, why would they ever fight for your success?
