^interesting to see that the chinesse are taking part in this "assault" as they are nowadays very active in the african continent for exploiting people and ressources with no ethics.
- not a far cry from what the U.S. did with many of those same countries in the 70s and 80sPoint5

my ancestors were pirates

Kind of sucks all around this situation. Not that it justifies their actions at all, but were I in a situation where my local economy were dessimated and I couldn't feed my family, I could see myself turning to crime. That's what piracy is anyway, it just still has the "Yarrgh" mystique still attached to it.
I've heard of more violent pirates, doesn't seem like this was the case with these guys. They would have shot the captain days ago if they were.
I don't know very much at all about the Ivory Coast (if that is where they hail from) except for a basic awareness of the toxic spill(s) and I've heard of it as being a dumping ground for corporate waste. But I think you can gain an understanding of why people do some of the things they do based on circumstances beyond their control, without condoning the violent or criminal choices they make.

I admit there is something fishy about the whole thing. The propaganda agents are strangely active.
I read "Obama congratulates", "Obama ordered the rescue action himself". We have "heroes". I read some Agency wants to mess around there:

They say somebody's funding the pirates.. what are the chances it's not those who just said it themselves? We have a country with no government that would be nice to own, so why not set up and sponsor some pirates there so we would have an opportunity to save the world again by placing our foot in there? Did I mention they said the top scapegoat Al Quaida was there too?
It looks a bit too similar to the whole WMD thing..
- Wow. Do you suspiciously eye your toaster while making breakfast in the morning as well?TheBlueOne
- In all fairness my toaster has "Take it back for the Workers!!" scratched into the side. Now I didn't do that, I tell you.harlequino
- Neither you or I know nearly half of it. I'm just playing "connect the dots", just getting different shapes than you :)raf
- And I admit I purposely wrote "Obama" not "the president", it yields more vigorous and automated replies :)raf

Untill theSeals dropped in, this situation was still controllable,
now that some locals are dead, you will see the most extremist fringes take over the situation,
from now on, there will probably be more casualties than before.
sad- I think it was beyond controllable way before that...TheBlueOne

so, after reading through this mess:
• ships are dumping nuclear waste in the ocean off the coast of Somalia; people have died, gotten sick, etc.
• European fishing boats are illegally overfishing off the coast of Somalia; there will soon be no fish in those water
• Somali fisherman turned into "coastal enforcers" turned into piratesso, is it safe to assume that people are eating nuclear fish also?

If you're shipping things in those large containers, is there pirate insurance? If I was on the phone with a shipping company and they suddenly brought up "pirate insurance," I think I'd lose my shit and collapse in a giggle fit.
- Yes. There is pirate insurance. Who do you think has been paying the ransoms up until now?TheBlueOne
- Um...wealthy cotton ranchers?harlequino

@doctorfufazi; Great read. Thanks for another perspective.

yeah it was a bunch of people on a boat who needed money.
Yarrrrgghh Captain Obvious, thats the only thing they can actually use,
diplomacy is impossible because there's no government, I thought the new administration was all about talking with "terrorist"
did you read the article I linked, overfishing by western boat and dumping of chemical product is not new and has been going on for a long time,
I guess if you lived in a madmax like world and had your only ressource of subsistance taken away you wouldn't fight back. No you would just joke about it and die happy.Getting back into the matter, it seems some people never learnfrom their mistakes, for years now the US has been doing illegal bombing and raids in Somalia, sudan, ethiopia apparently looking for terrorist (I won't google it for you).
I will tell you the reason why the US is going back inside Africa :
CHINA
don't think they sent the seals to liberate a captain, you are really gullible if you think thats the reason,
you see somalia is located in a densily trafficked route,
look at map (i did google that for you)its not about saving lives its once again about control of the flow of money
wake up- not to downplay anything you're saying, but I don't think anyone is ignorant to the fact that it's about money.Point5
- I don't know shit about the world, as I don't get to travel abroad and live in different places for any timePoint5
- Every country robs and steals, it just depends what level you're on.Point5
- so you should think about a problem more seriously, those peeps will fuckn cut you man, fuckn cut you :)GeorgesII
- Wait for TBO to ask you about the toaster..raf
- Point50
regardless, if boats were dumping waste and/or illegally fishing of the Somali coast fuck these motherfuckers for running up on any boat they can. People are desperate everywhere, however, if some motherfucker runs up in my shit pointing guns, well, I wish death upon you.

posted in the politics thread I though it should be repeated

@GeorgesII I am gullible? Give me a f*cking break.
Listen, I have no doubt that the U.S. has shat all over the third world including these African nations. But if I was a 18 year old Somalian criminal, the last thing I would be concerned about would be global politics. I would want to make a buck by hijacking some boats.
Case in point: this is the first U.S. boat they have hijacked in hundreds of years. If their motive was purely political, wouldn't they have gone after American ships from the start?
And whatever sins the U.S. has committed, it's hardly the fault of some sailors who happen to be sailing a boat through that region. If your family was captured and their life threatened by pirates would you be in favor of letting them off the hook? Somehow I doubt it...

is Pirate the new Terrorist?
