Question.... I'm planning a massive travelling mission next year and am super keen to squeeze burning man in. But after seeing those tickets go for 10k, I'm realising it's not just a matter of getting there.
How far in advance will I need to buy tickets, how much is face value on them, and roughly how much more would I need to spend if I literally had nothing except a little 2-man tent and a sleeping bag?
Also, is it possible to travel there without a car, and where would I need to be by when? (roughly of course)

hmmmm.....

@projectile
a lot of people are wondering what ticket sales are gonna be like next year. sign up for the newsletter at burningman.com and they'll let you know when tickets go on sale as well as give you tips and resources for getting prepared. i don't think you'll have any problem as long as you don't put off copping your tix. they're gonna be about 200-300 bucks. they sell in tiers, cheapest first to encourage buying early.
in addition to your tent and sleeping bag you're gonna need food and water for a week and a half. you'll need goggles to keep the dust outta your eyes, and a bandana to keep it out of your mouth. also sunscreen and chapstick.
there are villages that you can join for a fee (usually 200-300 bucks) that will provide a communal living space with shade, food and water. this is probably gonna be your best bet as a first-timer unless you're rolling with somebody who's been before. they'll look after you.
there are rideshares from the reno airport to the site. i haven't looked into it, but with a little googling you should find some info. i think gates open at midnight of the first day.

@projectile
you can totally do it. like scarabin said buy your tickets early, don't wait till the last minute and wonder why you don't have one. tickets are the first thing you need. after that shelter, food, water, fluffy stuff. etc. lol jkthis is my first year, i joined an existing camp, they don't provide food but they do have a ton of shade to camp under (very important if you ask me) water, a kitchen and a shower. you can always get ice there. other than coffee at center camp, ice is the only other thing you can actually buy there. there's no merchants so you need to bring in what you need. everyone has different needs, i'm putting extra creativity into my "sleep" space. i want to be able to "rest" (not that i'll be sleeping much i'm sure) but i want a nice comfortable place to crash when i do. i know some even sleep in their car. so it really is depending on you.
hope you do it. what i realized was that once i set my mind to it everything else just came together. :)
