i think these days you can't fully attribute punk rock to the sound anymore as no one will be able to capture the combined sound and ethos of black flag / minor threat. even bad religion, while they're still kicking and "punk" and all, have basically released the same album for the past ten years.
honestly i love punk rock but the bands who do the sound are all sounding stale. that new blake jawbreaker / cometbus band is pretty great. while they don't do the "strict" sound, silver mt zion has serious punk rock undertones and books only at independent venues/bars and just plays long tunes.
whatever. corporate music sucks.

I see these threads all the time on here dropping the staple band names... and wonder to myself how many of you were really ever into punk rock. Like "getting your baby teeth kicked out of your mouth at a show" into it...
- not all punk rock was getting the shite beaten outta yourself. personally i hid under the seats at gigs.airey
- I don't remember there being any seats.cannonball
- you went to some cheap fucking venues no?airey
- Punk shows as a rule have 4 fold out chairs in the very back of room next to the guy who puked on himself :)voiceof

So where does the panel sit with nofx or early beastie boys?
- i loved beasties but hated their first cd. so watcha want is still awesomeness. nofx, not so much.airey
- but i'd not have called beasties punk.airey

- Beastie Boys wanted to be like Bad Brains – hence the 2 B name.technikiller

anybody who 'made it' is automatically excluded from the 'real punk' club.
This is why minor threat is punk,
while bad religion is just a bunch of old guys with no fucking talent.
- Blasphemy! You dare trash talk Bad Religion! Name me one punk band started in 1980 that is still rocking today.elahon
- Minor Threat was the shit, though.elahon
- it's because they are still around today... hard to embody youthful rebelion when you're 45monNom
- The lad playing the guitar in the BR video was in Minor threat you fool.eflips

agreed, the shiite my 17 year old neph listens to and calls punk is so far from the truth.

- gg allin was embodied w the punk spirit, but punk as I define it died in 1979-1980. hardcore, postpunk etc: truly groundbreaking but...threadpost
- ah skip it.threadpost
- yeah skip it, he's a bore.sleepyfatso
- gg allen is a no talent hackfooler2
- True, but he does epitomize many of Punk's tenets in his own fashion, talent or not.cannonball

It was, and still is, more about the attitude and DIY ethos than it was about the music...

real punk still exists, but just look at that audience ?
- eh, not really into any of these bands, personallycannonball

why be limited to genres and stiff definitions? thats a very conservative point of view and not at all in the spirit of what once was coined as „punk“? but if you are interested in raw and intense music go and listen (for example) to the stuff on www.loadrecords.com/

I was thinking the exact opposite. I hate old punk and want to hear more FOB! weird.
